You've become an stiff in your old age.
I understand the idea behind it, and know it has racing origin. I just think it's turned into a fashion statement. If he's genuinely running a stretch for the purpose of stiffening the side wall of the rubber to increase sensitivity on the steering when he's tracking it? Cool.
If it's for looks, gay.
i tend not to analyse that much into it. it looks good. it drives sensationally. although it could do with a little more poke (NA6CE - 1.6L), they're a sensational chassis.
This particular car has Bilsteins, and bracing.

@Lukosh: To be completely fair, tyre stretch was originally a concept borne on the racetrack to improve precision in the handling of old school steering rack setups, it essentially stiffened the sidewall so input was more defined - these days, with the leaps and bounds made in tyre development, a good tyre will perform better without the stretch.

Buy tyres with stiffer tyre walls as normal race cars have and then you don't have the issues of risking the tyre bead popping off like they can with gay stretch.

Nikko, there were better options available than tyre stretch even in those days, this is why it was not rampant common practice amoungst all serious racing cars, I am sure some people did it and perhaps even had some degree of success with it, a lot of others playing around with it found that the tyre did not hold to the bead of the rim as well as it should and could pop off during some hard cornering.
It was actually fairly common place on all race cars in the 60's in Japan. If the bead comes loose the tyre wasn't seated sealed properly.

Not correct regarding the tyre not being seated correct, they could be seated "correctly" so to speak and still do it. tyre walls were never designed to be stretched outwards to that degree and would not be seated perfectly when stretched, the tyre wall would be fighting itself in that position in an attempt to pull itself back to its rest position.

The beaded seam position has acceptable tolerance, whether 'seated' was or was not the correct term to use I'm not sure.
You know I dislike the practice, that's why the discussion is happening in the first place. All I'm saying is it has motorsport origins and if it is done for a REASON then so be it. Go for it.
There are PLENTY of reasons not to do it;
