Cam,

I attempted this in my Outback and fried the module. Never bothered to fix it. Not exactly what caused the frying but I ran pos and neg wires from the dome light to the footwell of both pass and driver.

I gave it another go in the XT and ran wires from the ignition ring light. It actually worked this time as I pre-cut all the lengths of wires and put them in place before connecting to power source. However, the lights I used didn't stick properly and they were the 'cool white' which were too harsh for me.

Since then, I bought some 'warm white' LEDs and attempted to install them a few weekends ago. Unfortunately, the pos and neg wires touched and blew the module again :(

Did a bit more research this time and figured out exactly how to fix it. Went to the wreckers and bought a second hand module (brand new they're hundreds of dollars - second hand - $50!) Installed the new module and recalibrated the keys to work with it and BAM. Done!

The new LEDs are a bit yellowy than expected but better than the old ones!

Personally, I think it's a cool mod if done right but either unplug the module before starting or at least disconnect the battery :)

This also happened to me :sarcastic:

I've done this; but not to the module. Ran a separate circuit with a switch and fuse.. They're red. haha

Not my style mate. I like this mod because it's practical and fades in and out with the dome light.

Connect the plugs behind the driver kick panel

Hold the 'lock' button on the drivers door down

Press unlock on the remote twice.

Or it could be hold the 'unlock' button down on the drivers door and press lock on the key twice. Only one way works - can't remember which one though!

If you have more than one key, repeat the process with all keys and they'll all be synced on the same frequency.

Subaru charge something like $150 to do this for you!

Got my Warm White strips yesterday from eBay. Going to try and wire them up now. Morgs, did you remove the headliner to get the the dome light wires. then just run the along the top of the headliner and screw it back up? Or is there an easier way to get the LED's to fade in/ out with the dome light?

Wish me luck. Hopefully i don't fry anything like Morgs haha :P

My advice:

Disconnect the battery before you do anything. Removes any risk of frying anything!!

I just used a coat hanger to get from the dome light to the windscreen. Didn't have to undo any of the headliner.

Wired it so that I don't have to disconnect battery :) I've unplugged the dome light so it's all good :) I'll attempt a 'How To' and you'll see what I mean from the pictures.

I'm almost finished. Just soldering the joins in the footwell. One more question though. Where about did you stick the LED strip? Mine are about 20cm long. So I got two for each footwell. Any suggestions on where I should place them?

Two for each footwell??! It's going to be like a Christmas tree..!

Anywhere you can find a spot under there really!

I would definitely disconnect the neg terminal on the battery before you wire them up though..

Only problem I have now is where to mount lights on drivers side!

why not just disconnect the battery before doing work? Cam, just use the key barrel light as a signal to a relay, run all your interior lighting ( that you are adding) from the realy, will work untill the end of time;)

This is an old thread Benny. Keen to see results! Until then, Warm led interior lights work well
