I've steered clear of ethanol fuels in the past but prehaps its time to revist that decision.

Has anyone on here compared the performance and economy of various fuels (E10, 91, 95, 98) in an Impreza R ?
I do quite a few k's so I'm intrested to see if E10 may bring some benefits to the scooby.

Any thoughts or experiences anyone wants to share?

E10 destroys your car's innards. Stay well away!

E10 is fantastic.

It's cheap, Usually rated at 94RON, Won't destroy your cars fuel system as it's made up of plastic and alloy (With the exception of rubber o-rings in the injectors and the in tank fuel filter assembly)

I've seen cars that are hitting 450,000km's+ that have run E10 since day one and they haven't had one problem.

I use it every day in the outback and I'm not turning back. Ethanol is great.

98RON fuel is for performance cars and some will tell you it's going to give you better economy and clean your engine, I doubt it.

I've done tests and E10 ticks all the boxes.

It's not for old cars, Your Impreza R is not an old car.

Cam, that pretty much goes against everyone else's experience of E10. I know in my car it turns it into a slug and economy is terrible, to the tune of around 350k's to a tank versus 550-600k's on 98.

My vote would be to stick with 98.

I pay for good quality 98. But i do drive a shitpretzel, and i am just a n00b, not some some fancy automotive electrical mechanical technicain specilst with 33years subaru experience.

Falcon gets e10 and reg unleaded cause i dont give a fark.

Just saying what I've seen.

I never said 98 isn't better.

I have never used e10 but most people say its rubbish. (except cam :D) Having said that I have only ever put 98 in my Impreza.

Sounds like your saying it is better there, maybe im miss reading it though..

But i am curious as to what tests you done etc?? :)

Because if i can save 20cents a litre on fuel, have a cleaner engine and get better fuel ecconomy while not loosing any performance (because lets face it i barely have any as it is) i would like to know :)

3 identical Astra 1.8's set up in a benchmark environment (on stands) at Tafe.

Running BP 98, 95 and E10.

Each was given 10 litres at the exact same time, Exact same room. Running the same rpm cycles.

They all used fuel at around the same rate.

I like E10 because I get the exact same results running E10 compared to 98 for less money.

Run your car on E10 without the idea of it being the devils work and post results.

Interesting results, Cam.

Is that with just leaving them running for the same amount of time? Not actually driving them?

My wife came up to me one night (giggidy) and complained that the SP20 was running really rough and felt sluggish to drive. I asked her what fuel she used last. She was scarily close to empty a few days earlier so had to use E10 at the local BP (couldn't find the only 95 pump) in the station.

I asked her to fill up with 95 next time and see if it makes a difference.. It did and has never has the problem again.

In-laws also had lots of issues in their Accord after running E10 for about 18 months.

Oh yeh.

Ive used plenty of different fuels, and consistantly get better fuel ecconomy out of bp 98, compared to there 95. And so does everyone else i know who's used it.

Anyway not that ive done any reaearch into it but why cant i use e10 in my boat of its as good as any other fuel?

Simulating road conditions. So load on the engine.

Ran the exact same benchmark on them all using 3 laptops.

Did they do a one off tank of fuel or did they use it consistently?

Don't know much about boats.

Maybe boat engine manufactures don't want to take the risk of something having varying ron rating.

One full tank from fuel light empty.i notice the difference, and if they are all the same wouldnt it stay the same? Not improve or get worse?

Ive noticed a few petrol stations have 'not for marine use' on the e10 pumps.

4 laptops for 3 engines?

Never use E10 in a boat engine. It eats away fuel lines, diaphragms and causes all other sorts of havoc.
We see at least 1 boat a week come in which has been run on ethanol and it usually costs them big dollars to fix.

I guess it's the same as anything...

Some people have positive experiences with it and some have negative. Everyone will base their judgement on those experiences and that will work for them :)

I've always considered E10 in boxer engines to be evil. I've never put it in my suby, but I'm going to do a tank worth next full up. There's no point being sceptical if I don't have hard evidence. I'm not one to just believe something, I have to see for myself. I'll post up my results. Last tank was 98 and I did 420k's in heavy weekly traffic driving

420k's?! I get better than that in the B4 and it's always on boost!
