Thinking about putting in some sound deadening mats to help minimise the rattle from new speakers. Thoughts?

Speakers shouldn't be rattling if they're in properly?

Vibrations from the speakers is what I mean.

Ah trim rattling? Gotcha. Dynamat will help but chances are you will still hear it faintly. A spacer between the speaker and trim made of MDF or something will probably help if there's room, otherwise your best bet is pulling off the door trim and trying to find what's rattling, then you can try and stop it.

Fair point. I used Aeropro black 6.5" speaker spacers in the front. Should I have used MDF ones instead?

The only aerpro ones I can see (http://www.mycarster...rs-details.aspx) are MDF? What are yours made of? Otherwise you can always stick some dynomat over the spacer. But I would be trying to identify the rattle so you can deal with it directly, rather than muting it.

My mistake. The ones I got are MDF. I had a look on the weekend but really couldn't quite pinpoint it. Must have another look when I get a chance. But if everything is in tightly I should't have the problem?

Hahaha. Obviously. If its only vibrating at ridiculous volumes, I wouldn't worry. If it's doing it all the time, pull off the door trim and play music through the speakers until you find what's causing the problem. You could dynamat at the same time, it's not going to do any harm

Just did the speaker install in my 04 (only a humble GX but hey) over the weekend and also did some preliminary work on deadening the drivers door. It makes some difference, more from road noise than speaker related. I'll be doing the other doors when i tinker more and work out exactly how much of "what" I need "where".

Jaycar carry about 4 different types, they're all on their website with different descriptions:

Clark rubber also sell closed cell foam in different thicknesses from about 11 to 23 dollars a meter (for the 2 thicknesses you'd want for this application anyway)

It didn't go as well i'd have liked today, spent too long messing around. But I think it makes the biggest difference if you use deadening material furthest from the hinge... we're not talking multiple layers here, the "super deadener" stuff linked above works pretty well. tbh I didn't get the others.

(Plus more reading. I've got all this open atm anyway:)

I think i need to place some of that dampening near the rear of my car near the exhaust lol. It just reverberates from the boot to the cabin and it suuuucks lol..

i'd go for 4 tubes, might as well get the discount.

I think covering the outer skin as well as you can by worming your way through the 4 or so access holes you've got is probably the biggest impact. 1.5 sheets should do each side, do one layer and try to overlap a little at the seams. Use your last sheet do do what you can on the inner skins. I couldn't be bothered messing with the clips to move cabling and the door mechanism so I just tapped the panel to find areas that vibrate more than others and did patch jobs. Phone sized patches at a minimum I should think, otherwise it probably doesn't add enough weight.

One tip I remember from reading is to weight the middle, you don't need to extend the dampener to the edge of the panel, you can probably leave ~2 inch margins. The key is probably to try to not go overboard, theres a diminishing return here.

I then used some contact gel to stick down the 1/4in foam to the inside of the door trim, cutting to fit. - whether this helped much I don't know as I should have done the dampener then test driven then do the trims to compare.

If someone with more experience wants to chime in and correct me feel free.

Have you tried looking at any wiring that could be rattling against the door or trims?

I haven't noticed anything. But then again I probably didn't look hard enough

It'll probably be the wiring Harry.

Next time I see you can you take a look?

Unless one of the connectors/clips came loose I couldn't see how any of the wiring could cause a rattle, some of it was already wrapped in sections of light foam. Loose bushings or something on the handle mechanism could be a source, though. There are also 2 pieces of polystyrene inside the door, depending on how weathered your car is I suppose they could have degraded, but mine seemed fine (but I believe it's been garaged most of its life). Not entirely sure on their function, couldn't see what they were meant to be padding.

I put the speakers in, I tucked the wires in but they have probably popped out.

Some thin sheet foam and some cable ties will fix it harry :)
