It's been a while since my last update so I'll fill you guys in on what has been happening with the car.

Not a great deal really and it's been neglected over the past few months. The reason being, I have had a bunch of trouble codes and a CEL that just would not quit.

The weird thing is, I had 3 codes......

P0174 - System too lean bank 2

P0015 - B" Camshaft Position -Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

P0128 - Coolant Thermostat malfunction

The car was running like shit and using heaps of fuel. There was also sooty deposits on the bumper around the exhaust pipe so obviously it was running rich. I pulled out the thermostat and the seal was completely cactus. This made me think that replacing the Thermostat would sort out the P0128 code but sadly not. Turns out the Coolant temp sensor that reports to the ECU was also cactus.

My mechanic mate described to me the function of this Temp sensor and said it basically helps the ECU decide how much fuel to deliver for the temperature range the engine is in. Because it was malfunctioning the ECU would just send an amount of fuel similar to what it does in limp mode. That's putting it simply.

I replaced the sensor yesterday and the CEL was gone and the other codes were a result of the Temp sensor not working also.

What a difference it has made. The car is so nice to drive now and is boosting hard and smooth. Very happy.

Next on the list of things to do is replace the clockspring and wiring in the steering wheel to hopefully clear the airbag light which has been on since the engine conversion.  Now the car is running great I'm motivated again. It got to the point where I couldn't be bothered to even wash the car because I was sick of it and the shitty performance.

Happy days....  :D

I'm stoked mate. She absolutely screams now with way less VOD and the primary boost comes on earlier and much much stronger.  Driving to work this morning was fun :D .

Running better than it ever has.

Keen as to hit the drags early in the new year to see what times she's pulling.  I don't want to sound cocky but I think a few people will be suprised, including myself.

Nice work with the car Josh! Just spent the morning reading your thread instead of working... Like a bawse.

Really makes me want to give my RX another chance to mod the shit out of it.

Keep up the inspirational work.

HA!

I love the wheels.

As soon as she hands it to you, slowly take of your pants, then, while staring her straight in the eyes rub it against the tip of you penis, while continuing your painfully intense gaze whisper to her;

"My eye is watering, this might be a bit hot"

I should just convert to single, right?

I have to do my clockspring also, doesn't look like a very hard job. But I have finally sourced myself a ignition barrel also so will be changing that over at the same time.

Your car is still looking the goods, still very jealous of how your engine bay looks.

Plastidip/armorall protectant is great stuff mate. Use electrical tape for masking and spray the masking line so it's wet just before you remove the tape.

Yeah the clockspring is a peice of piss mate.

I just checked out a Gen 3 column I have in the shed. Looks like a shit job!!!

I'd rip out the whole steering column and do it on a bench. Looks like you'll have to drill out the screws too.

Yeah this was the mistake I made, i peeled the tape of when the dip was dry, bad move.

Yep totally different to paint. I found i could run a blade around the mask line and score through the plastidip to get a clean edge.

So Josh, what exactly are you doing with the ECV? I found this article has some pretty good info for ECV adjustment:

I'd love to pull it out and port it a little at some stage.

Going to give it a shot, I asked Subaru and they wanted $899 just for the barrel without install. So figure I should give it a shot myself first as its not a big job, just annoying. It will be good to be able to jump in my car, put the key in and just start it. I look like i'm stealing the car everytime I have to start it hahaha.

All because some low life drilled out the barrel.

Just adjustments to find a happy medium.

I believe It was adjusted to the point where the secondary was spooling most of the time and it has now worn out the seals,  just from regular low rev/daily driving using the primary.

The Secondary was hitting peak boost of 20 psi at 5000rpm. It was kicking in like a jet engine.  Fun but not practical because boost from the primary was feeding it and low end power was suffering because of this.

In my understanding of how all this shit works,  with the EGCV closed the primary is in full operational boost capability with no psi being bleed off through the wastegate or EGCV (spooling the secondary)

With slight adjustments I have managed to find a point where the primary is strong at 17 - 18psi and the secondary kicks in more subtly, hitting 20psi at about 6000rpm.

So, I think the valve was open slightly and when the secondary came into operational range it was fully spooled, thus hitting 20 psi almost instantly.

I could be right off track here but TBH this engine is my experiment and I really don't care if I blow it with fine tuning and forking around to find the best acceleration set up.

Just want it to run as good as it can without actually forking with the ecu map... know what I;m saying!? Back yard fine tuning an already great tune.
