Are you trying to say that Scuba-Roo is an aboriginal on a broken scooter?

Mines, hey?

I've had a few conversations about this.

Interesting observation I've had with people I've watched go to the mines chasing fortune, is that they quickly return.

Mind you, this is as unskilled labourers. If you're going in with a skill, it may well be a different story.

I wouldn't have thought that the mines would need someone to draw teh pikshurs?

These are Local coal mines, Alex! So no FIFO shit. It's really hard to get into these places. So an apprenticeship would be a good foot in the door.

Plus I'm always open to a career change!
(It's a fitters apprenticeship)

I would have liked to work in the mines when I was single... but as an IT guy... pay is nuts... considering the graduates from uni are getting paid about $130k out the door in the mining industry, its crazy!

but with 1-2 year contracts, yeah, it's fast cash, but inevitably, as you say, graduates going out the door of unis getting snapped up, your position is only a matter of (a short) time.

job security > fast cash.

FIFO is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. If you're drawing pikshurs, then you're halfway in the door into fitter/turner apprenticeship, no?

Pay inevitably better? Or is this to stay closer to home?

Apprenticeship moneyz is going to blow chunks.

Underground Miner operators straight out of year 10 could get 100k a year a few years back

dangermoneyz.

also the health of such workers wouldn't be the best.

I would say I'd have a pretty good foot in the door.
1- I designed the machinery they use down there.
2- I have underground experience.
3- I already have a relevant trade so could fast track the tafe.
4- I'm damn good at interviews :D

If the money is on par with what in on now, as an apprentice. And Inwas offered the job, I would take it.

Closer, better opportunities, faster rate of climbing in pay scales.

Yeah Alex, it does seem like something you do short term for large amounts of quick money, kind of like contracting in IT, but not ideal in the long run, less like Adam, you can make a career of it, which isn't easy.

I chased the IT dream when I was doing 4 unit computers in high school.

Spoke to many people in the industry, and they all encouraged me not to go this route. So I didn't.

Adam - you already have mine experience? I guess you'd be fairly resilient to chambers filled with gas?

Hai Shaz.
