Wow, I forgot how full of oxygen thieves Rexnet is.
You have got to be driving like a cock to break a 5speed, I've broken one.
That was due to a hard second change with a heavy duty clutch.
It all depends on what you want out of the car, If you wanna be cheap and see how long it lasts, Fair enough, It would be a pain in the ass having to re-do everything later wouldn't it?
If you want it to last while giving it a hard time with extra power/torque, Rebuild the 5speed with stronger internals or take the step up to a 6speed.
I've been down both those roads and I would take my built, close ratio 5 speed over my 6 speed any day of the week.
Do it once, Do it right.
I personally am not a huge fan of the 6 speed.. it revs out way to fast.. in other standard rex`s ive been in they rev up to 100kmph in second. But my 6 speed is reving its head off at 80 in second.

v3 STI with a 4.444..
Is actually quite a good ratio.. i often find myself sitting in 4th.. alot more than i did with the 4.111 Lib ratios..
Anyway so the consensus here is a NA box will be fine at 150KW but if you are doing any track work or any HARD driving.. its probably going to pop...
Can i just suggest.. for $500 you can get a 4.444 Box and diff from Bobbyjimmy in Canberra i think.. i have been very tempted to buy it but just funds are tight atm..
(might be getting too much into this track day stuff.. thinking of having spare gearboxes... WTF haha)

Never understood it.. just make a 5 speed with an extra gear for saving fuel on the freeway...

The way I see it, the 6 speed sti box is farkin strong.
That's the reason it's used behind big Kw engines.
Close ratio is also good for track work.

the size of the 6spd gears are enormous compared to the 5spd, it is a far superior box!

RPM in top gear will depend on ratios anyway, there are a few options for 6 speed boxes (JDM, AUDM - sti, liberty GT/3RB), same as the 5sp boxes. 4.11 I was running would put me about 3500rpm @ 110km/h. Was good for boosting in fifth gear, but not great for noise and petrol. Not sure about you guys, but chasing power pretty sure you're not too worried about noise and fuel.
If you don't mind the work, I don't see why keeping a 5 speed until it breaks is a bad thing... Things breaking are a perfect time to upgrade, if it doesn't break then you don't need to lose the few grand on 6 speeds + accessories. That being said, I'm currently weighing up a v7 cut whether to include 6 speed + r180 gear... but I'm going to be sending all power to the rears. No doubt the 6 speed is unbreakable, everyone who has one swears by it -- If you can find a buyer for a 5 speed and want to save the rest for a 6 speed then do it - otherwise just suck it and see. 280+kw's on stock box is amazing, definitely the most I have seen running through one.
