$250-300 to fit a new thermostat. Sound about right??

$40 for a thermostat/o-ring

$40 for coolant

$210 for 2.1 hours labour: Driving the car into the workshop, Pulling it apart, Putting it back together, Bleeding the cooling system properly (2-3 fan cycles), Road test and then top up the overflow + Final check over.

Sounds about right, I would charge the above for a turbo subaru.

Apparently they ran the car, one hose was hot, one was cold, and as they couldn't find any leaks even under pressure/load they are saying the thermostat is at fault. I have no idea if this is a solid diagnosis. Jase???

Was this something to do with the breakdown? Deets?

That symptom could also be blocked radiator or a very dead pump. Most commonly it's the thermostat.

Was the quote from a dealer? Price seems a tad high but not unreasonable.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

@#%&$##*!

Somehow the setting on the instrument cluster has lost the 'needle sweep' when the ignition is turned on and I can't get to come back on.

I have read the owners manual and followed the procedure......nup.

Mate I'm happy to take your word on such things. Cheers for the breakdown.

Country driving( cruising at about 115kmph) notice the temp getting up around 3/4. Backed off to 100kmph ( also turned the heating on full to draw some heat out if the engine bay) and the temp dropped slightly, then spiked up towards red before settling back down to around 3/4 again. I knew there was a roadhouse a few kms on so pushed on till there watching the gauge closely. Got to roadhouse, popped bonnet and saw that coolant had leaked ie there was coolant splashed about top side of engine bay. A little bit dripping off the bash plate onto the ground, but no big puddle.

Rac dude couldn't find a leak, advised tow.

Mechanics pressure tested the rad, and found no leaks. Called the wife as they couldn't fault the car! She mentioned the obvious coolant in the engine bay and have a run down on how it happened. They took it for another longer test drive to replicate conditions. Found one hose hot and the other cold. Diagnosed thermostat.
