It just depends which size is more common I guess.

Another random question I've got, is it better to increase the width of the tyre or the aspect ratio? I am under the impression that increasing the width would improve handling, whereas increasing the aspect ratio would improve comfort? Therefore;

  • 215/45 R18 - Standard
  • 225/45 R18 - Better handling
  • 225/40 R18 - Less comfort

I know we could only be talking about a few millimetres here but I am just trying to get a better understanding.

225/45 won't be better handling... it will be a taller tyre and wider - this doesn't mean better handling especially if it is a "standard" road going tyre.

stick with standard sizing.

So I've bitten the bullet and gone with a quality tyre and size based on the OEM specs; Bridgestone Potenza S001s in 225/40 R18.

All for $870 inclusive of wheel balance and wheel alignment. I definitely cannot argue with that.

Funnily enough I can actually feel the difference between these and the Federal Formoza FDs I had previously. I assume the wider tyre plays a part, but I would've thought the ride would be rougher having gone with a lower profile. Seems like the soft compound of these tyres are proving extremely beneficial. Extremely happy and definitely a believer of not skimping on tyres. Thanks for all the help in this topic guys.

Isn't OEM spec for gen 4 a 45 profile on an 18inch wheel? Great price regardless!

Not for the STi rim as it's 7.5" wide instead of the regular 7" (my mate has an STi and it happened to be those sizes, as was the feedback I got from people with STi's with these exact same rims and width). Someone from the SubyClub and/or club.liberty Facebook group hooked me up. Such a top bloke and the price is second to none.

Good job Garry on getting the Potenza's. I know first hand as well how quality tyres can make all the difference...

you'll get more ride difference from 5psi either way in the tyre, IMHO.

That could just be a contributing factor as well. They feel amazing at any speed.

Not on the facelift TbSTi's. Oem is 225/40/18.

Great choice Gary.

Thanks Mark. It's worked out exactly as I wanted. I'm just waiting to get the money to get STi pinks off Mosti and everything should be perfect.
