Wow, it's funny how things just seem to pop out of the blue...

I think I may have found an awesome deal on either RE003 or S001; in my size too. Giving the guy a call back on Tuesday. Only catch is that I've gotta travel to St Ives which will be about a 45 minute trek. But if it saves me $150-$200 then I'm cheering.

Fingers crossed it all works out.

45 mins? Pfft thats nothing. I'm doing a 3 hour round trip tomorrow morning for parts for the Liberty.

BTW, tyres on the '08 tb STi are 225/40.

Exactly. Should be good. Things sound really promising.

So I should go for 225/40 R18's for my STi rims too? The guy I'm dealing with said that he would go the same size even though they're a little wider. And a few spec sites for the STi have the tyre sizes as 215/45 R18.

235/40 are fine on 7.5" wheel done it plenty of times before.

Probably OK, but IIRC minimum rim width is 8.0".

This would be the OEM size for the 7.5" rim?

Yes. The spare is a matching rim and still has the original '07 manufacture Bridgestone which is 225/40.

if you decide to go with a 225 40 there are no RE003s available and Bridgestone don't know when they will have more.

Awesome. Thanks Mark. Looks like I'll be going with 225/40 R18 then. Hopefully the quote doesn't differ too much with this new place I've found out about.

Try Tempe for 225 40s. They have Eagle F1 Directional 5s for only $167 each.

I'll grab a quote from them as well Josh, thanks mate.

I've done my research and here is what I've managed to find with regards to sizes for the 7.5" wide STi rim.

3h0DqSw.png

And here are the tyre sizes for 7", 7.5" and 8" wide rims.

lm5wsWj.png HvQQzJa.png QfB462A.png

I am obviously going to go for something in the middle box in the top screenshot and am leaning towards 215/45 R18 and 225/45 R18. I'm getting quotes on both tyres (S001 and RE003) in both sizes and will do the deal if the price is right. Thank you so far to everyone that's helped with their opinions, suggestions and tips. I will not be skimping on tyres as everyone has suggested so I am going to try and aim for the best, it all just comes down to cost and how much I can afford. I will say that the Bridgestone Potenza S001s are the target.

The guys didn't make any mention of not having stock when I called for the quote. Either way I'm getting the better deal elsewhere and they have stock ready. It'll just take a couple of days for them to arrive.

225/45 R18 would look just as good on the wider STi rim. ;)

It just depends which size is more common I guess.

Another random question I've got, is it better to increase the width of the tyre or the aspect ratio? I am under the impression that increasing the width would improve handling, whereas increasing the aspect ratio would improve comfort? Therefore;

  • 215/45 R18 - Standard
  • 225/45 R18 - Better handling
  • 225/40 R18 - Less comfort

I know we could only be talking about a few millimetres here but I am just trying to get a better understanding.

I will depend on the rim width.

If you go too wide on a rim, the the tyre squirms around more and handling suffers.

Increasing the width and keeping the same aspect ratio will also increase the diameter of the tyre.

Handling comes from the tread pattern and the compound.

Gaz, don't over think it.

99% of people buy tyres based on one thing......

...... price.

Ha ha, this was a legitimate knowledge-only question. It's not the make or break on what I'm getting. I'm already set on 225/45 R18.

Increasing the diameter of the tyre decreases the accuracy of your speedometer reading, right? So to benefit in all areas, going the 215/40 R18 would be better than the 225/45 R18 and 225/40 R18?

My tyre placard in the door says stock is 45... yet my speedo is out about by about 10% all the time

You probably wouldn't see any difference between a 215 and a 225 (except about $50)

There's a ratio checker thingy online somewhere, you enter the numbers in and it'll tell you the exact size you need, or it'll tell you how far your speedo will be out

Go to small and it'll read high, too big and it'll read low

The difference would be more visual if anything.

I didn't find the website you're looking for, but I found another one that gave me these cool pics.

Wheel-Size.com. The first set of boxes with information was from Tyre Size Calculator.
