Shiv - Harsh call there. You've experienced this? VY's with 4spds I've driven weren't that bad. Sure they weren't inspiring, but they're not an inspiring car to drive to begin with. But they're not as bad as you make them out to be.

Yup I've driven extensively the VTII, VY and VZ. Not harsh at all, EVEN the Aussie press are starting to hammer it since the FG is out.

My gripe being that they are not good in city traffic where you start-stop. When you lift off the throttle to coast to a traffic light, it judders and shakes (deliberate exaggeration) to a stop. Also, there just isn't enough engine braking available, which can be frustrating when following someone driving below the speed.

But to understand how off the mark it is, you need to compare it to the FG. I'm yet to drive one an FG (might have to rent one when next interstate). But the general thoughts being echoed is that it is far superior to the Commo in terms of its drive train.

LOVE the sound of that twin turbo Landcruiser! Should take it to the dunes and do what the Saudi's do and drive it up the sand banks :D Nothing but sky...

Someone tell me. Do the FG wagons still run a live, leaf sprung rear end as the earlier models? Perhaps why there's no tarbo lover (except for F6 ute range = death)

As mentioned mate, no FG wagon, but yes, the wagons that they are currently selling (BF mk2) still have the ancient leaf sprung rear end.

Madness...

AFAIK, Ford are not going to release a wagon in the FG Falcon range. It seems they are pinning hopes on the now visually overhauled Territory and the new Territory being their family wagon.

Oh dear! That's not good news for GM at all.

WTF? Are they serious? That is just plain weird. Bloody Goat Herders.

funny thing is they copied that idea off a small used car dealer in hamilton. Watch this guys video about this - he is a little un-hinged, but what he says seems to be true. Pretty shady nicking ideas off small operators

Shiv, I dunno what the f*ck you are talking about re- the 4spd auto. None of it is actully correct. Sure, it wont blow smoke up your arse, and yes you have to use the brakes to slow down (heaven forbid!). They don't shake/shudder unless they're rooted. They shift smooth as silk when in good condition, and shift hard and fast when in power mode. (and even better again when the mapping is editied). How ever, they are an old gearbox. The gearbox in the new (<-- NEW) Falcon is a new peice of kit. So no shit its going to be better. I still hold the Holden 6spd in high regard though. For the cost, I don't think you could ask for a better gearbox, and with mods. Its simply awesome.

Paul, your reading too much into my post. Its merely an observation of MY experiences using that gearbox ;) I don't expect you or anyone to agree with that.

And as I said - when compared to its rivals, its long in the tooth and then some. It certainly doesn't mean the gearbox is incapable of doing its job. Its just not as good as that of its rivals and is in desperate need of an update to remain competitive in such a closely fought market.

the VE sv6 6spd box is a great box! infact the VE sv6 was a great car to drive, when compared to a BA XR6 i was surprised as to how poor it was to drive. On saying that they were both rental cars, and i am comparing apples to oranges, but their both fruit :P my 2cents

I was just stunned as to why you made the comparison.
It's like taking a modle A ford and comparing it against a veyron. It goes with out saying.

The 4spd has been updated.
But its retained in the pov spec models. Which are cheap, very cheap. But if you want a decent holden, you gotta pay for it. Which Is the issue Chris has.

Oh yeh I remember that. It was such a stupid test. Acceleration, braking and doing pointless burnouts because it makes it look more like TGUK. Just dumb!

Thankfully TGA is getting better this season though :)

hmmm....that Aston = droooool!!

You have to compare two cars of level playing feild.
Holden offers everything ford does in terms of tech. It just costs more.

The 4spd is in the taxi spec vehicles for people who don't give a rats arse and just want a family sedan.

Shiv - no more gearbox reviews from you!! you're comparing apples with goats testicles. they're both incomparable. Like Paul said, perhaps you've had all dungers. Funny story I have with AU Falcons. A rental I had back in 2000 WOULD NOT EVEN CRACK A CHIRP. Even when revved in neutral (and those who'd know, know they're rev limited in 'N' to prevent N->D Dump damage. Then I got an AU as a company car. Same generation. Same model. Difference was the colour. Probably the best skid machine I've ever had. Ever. With the most minimal effort, it'd generate oodles of white fluffies all day, every day. Back to commodores. Yeah the 4speed may not be the best thing around, it's certainly not the worst. Go and drive: 1978 Civic With a Hondamatic. 1974 Diesel Landcruiser 1980 Corolla 3 speed 1964 Brougham 2 Speed Powerglide Any tricked up Drag car runnning a manualised auto with a transbrake. Then come back and give me a review!!

Aww your no fun, I was just about to submit my review of a Daewoo 1.5 from the 1990's. Its a 3spd :P Although the "1964 Brougham 2-spd" you listed might be worse, hahaha....

HAHAHA white fluffies. Speaking of gearboxes, mine works.. but it's clutchless :( I had to do clutchless gearchanges on my way home tonight , ha ha - luckily I didn't have to stop at lights (came VERY close though) otherwise I would not have been able to get going (clutch has 0 left on it). Will check fluids tomorrow but I think its 100% warn. Looks like the major service is getting done on my front lawn after all!

Powerglides rawk. 100kmh in first, 200kmh in second. win. Economy, wat? Worst auto ever? Subaru 4speed. They explode behind engines with less than 100hp. Just ask me.
