Just tried a Daleside "Ripon Jewel"...... nothing special. Wasn't too bad.

As said it wasn't offensive in any way, very malty, couldn't taste any hops. Dunno... just wasn't very interesting.

Chambly Noire (unibroue again, soz Nik) miss it. not enough flavour. has sliiiiight hints of smokey/burnt coffee but just not enough to make it any more than "meh". Reminded me, slightly, of bashah i'll give it a point for not being completely bland, but yeah.. 3 from 5 Unibroue

Hi, Seems we are lacking that taste of inspiration in a lot of the beers with fancy names that are fooling us at the counter of our locals. It would seem we need to look a bit further. The boutique beer market is becoming like the confectionery aisle at Woolworths. Every big name is trying to reinvent ever single sugar filled snack as their own, the beer world is following. All this crap like 'Coopers 62' and 'Limited Edition Squires' is starting to make me sick. Everytime one of us seeks out a new Australian boutique label, they have to bombard us with YET ANOTHER BLOODY PALE ALE. I mean, come on. Enough is enough. I think we should set the task for the next week to do a touch of research before purchasing a new brew, or at least one we haven't tried already. Let's get some good drops back on these pages. Who's with me? Cheers, Nik

Hi, I think I'm going to be a bit more mindful of getting any of the really obscure stuff from the IBS in future. I have a serious inkling that the last couple of left field brews I have tasted have held massive taint and gone off. Especially that BD STORM. Still sour about that. On the home front. Bootleg have just imported a new type of American hop, I believe its called Citrano (sp?) or similar? I understand they are one of, if not the only, people using it in Australia. They've thrown a boat load at one of their new brews, which I'm eager to taste tonight. Cheers, Nik

Because it's my favourite style of beer I often do grab any "new" Pale I see, I only post em up here so others that don't often try boutique beers may use it as a guide and not be put off (if they happen to choose a shit one).

I try mate, I try....

I always get "new" beers that I haven't tried.... Unfortunately cos of my geological position, I sort of have to take whatever is on offer, which does also unfortunately mean I get a few duds too. Win some lose some.... Even the ones I don't like I do still enjoy drinking them.

Hi, Oops. Just re-read what I wrote when you quoted it. That line about the bombarding of pale ale, wasn't directed at those who post in this thread, it was directed at the Australian brewers who just seem to bench everything they do in bottle to pale ale. Doh. Didn't mean to come off like a dick. Cheers, Nik

Finishing a Wells "Bombardier" english bitter...

Quite a nice brew (mmmm fuggles). I was admiring the colour of it (firey copper red) till I read the ing., it's got bloody colouring in it WTF!!! That in itself has soured an otherwise good experience.

P.S. My apologies for not having pics for the last 2 brews, I have taken pics but can't find the camera cord to get em on the puter.

Its got colouring in it?! That is just wrong, but I may have to try it sometime ;) Last night I had some Monteiths Summer Ale. Right up my alley it was! Sort of tastes like ginger beer (sorry I'm not that good at the describing part :P). Also had some Little Creatures, and some Fat Yak...about $60 all up. Had it out of a some tall beer glasses, and made the whole experience that little bit better :)

Unibroue just jumped to 4/6. Whatever the poncey french for 3 guns is.. That one. Unlike the one above, the % comes across more, slight dried fruit taste (its not screaming fruit, but its there), little chocky (again, nothing over the top). Begin yeasts ?? You know what I mean by that. Very similar to the last one, just more.

Hi,

Gluten free, or 'gimick filled' beer is usually pretty crap. But if you're allergic (?) then it'd probably fill the void quite well. Apparently the Australian brewed - O'Briens Premium Larger is quite a nice drop. You will find most gluten free beers seem to be below 4.5% - I have no idea why. But, I have heard of a company in Denmark, or Czech or maybe Holland that are making a 7%'er.

Might be worth a look, eh Richo? :D

This is the company rocking the hardcore percentages, but I can't see it on their website. Instead, a whole buch of crazy stuff!

Mongozo!

Check out the 'Quinua' grain beer (probably the only one that's not gluten free mind you...) - how cool does that sound? The original grain beer of the Incans! Might have to give the old IBS a ring today...

Cheers,
Nik
