Something like these mofos?

Now just to cover all bases - What am I going to need.. assuming I basically have a fermenter and shit to keg with..... I want to know anything else I will need to make beer with grain :D.

I need the mash tun with a false bottom, You can use the same vessel for sparging too hey? from there a boiler am I right? or have I missed something...

Hi,

Sprage happens in the mash tun, correct, then you head to the kettle for boil.

Those prices are pretty damn high mate, unless that's delivered I'd be looking at these guys

http://www.beerbelly.../stockpots.html

You can buy an assembled mash tun from them, but you're talking a fair bit of coin $600+. They have standard 50L's for $235 though...

Check out this;

http://www.beerbelly.../mashequip.html

The 'falsie' is a seriously cool piece of kit.

Cheers,
Nik

That is pretty cool.

I would only be wanting finish up with 19-20L after a batch - 40L-50L jobbies will be big enough for that?

I kind of like that false bottom you showed me - probably fits in with my budget at this time as a $600+ mush tun does not right at this moment :(... my only concern would be an esky's ability to maintain the correct temp for the length of time required.

BTW any dissadvantage in using Aluminium as apposed to stainless steel?

Hi,

I have a 70L mash tun and I can push it to a 90L kettle volume with extended sparge. You can even use cutting liquor and go harder.

So by logic you would easily get the 25L you would require into fermenter.

Cheers,
Nik

Hi,

You seem to have cash to burn! Your ultimate setup would be a 24L mash tun purpose built from beerbelly + a 50L kettle.

Cheers,
Nik

LOL I wish!

So the 24L would be fine for doing a single batch?.. I really like the look of their mash tuns...... It is not so much a matter of I can't afford to spend that much (not that I earn much) as it is me needing to justify the expense.

It looks super sweet though...........

........

........

Another $953.90 before I get a burner set up..... something to cool the wort (like the copper spiral) etc.....hmmmmmmmm

Wow, I have never heard of half these beers.

I'm a beer noob and want to learn. Now what is something easy to start off with..nice and light.

Also where do you guys buy all these beers? Dan Murphys? 1st Choice? or local bottle o's?

Special beer stores?

I will read the whole thread but want some ideas for tonight.

Thanks all

Hi,

Tell me before you get anything mate! We'll go through it properly and make sure it's what you want. It's a lot of coin to spend if you're going to get bored of it in a couple of months!

Jesse: Where do you live?

Nik

Yeah for sure, will be sure to consult the oracle before I make a move.

I don't see that I will get bored of it hey.. I enjoy cooking and have done so since I was young... I get a similar feeling from making beer, that and the fact that I LOVE beer. If I can produce a good beer consistantly I would be more than happy to spend the time to do so, saves me Kesh on buying a carton - and I get to pour it off tap :D

I do appreciate your advice thus far Nik - I can be pesky and ask a BILLION questions about things, sometimes I may ask the same question worded differently and not even mean to do so, I am naturally a very knowledge hungry person and will want to know EVERYTHING which can piss some people off.

Hi,

I don't care how many questions you ask me, you know if you start to annoy me I will simply tell you to fork off and ask me again tomorrow.

One thing to bare in mind, full grain brewing will take you about 6 hours in total to complete a brew, including transfer to fermenter. It would be very cool to have an even smaller setup like you're looking at, you can just do anything in it! Also, I can get grain sent direct to you, because the prices on those websites you sent me are forking insane - and I have a mate at Bintani that said he could mill it before he sent it to you.

Cheers,
Nik

you are god like my friend, that would be fantastic to get the grain at a better price! especially if it is milled!

Does having the larger set-up limit you a bit?

Hey Nik, I live in Brisbane.

We have a U-Brew-It just down the road, are they any good? I hav done U-Brew-It once before down in Melbourne but we just followed the the instructions to the letter and didn't really experiment that much.

Hi,

Josh: My setup is still considered TINY, there is NO limits at all, except if you come up with a hair brain scheme for a new amazing ale that turns out to be shit, the bigger the brew - the bigger the waste.

@Jesse: They are OK mate. Good fun. Pretty point and shoot, can't really go wrong. Much better and rewarding if you do the brew, and indulge in a kegerator setup like Lukosh has.

What are your local bottle shops? Any of them online? We've been recommending beers to people for a while now through the net... maybe if you find a local to you that has a site we can get you on your way to real ale!

Cheers,
Nik
