Seized the opportunity with the nice weather to go for a day trip out to Milawa and Beechworth on easter sunday. Didnt take many photos cos was driving and enjoying some extremely nice local produce.

Cant recommend the Milawa Cheese Factory more for a picnic and some awesome cheese and cured meat

I remember going there with my parents about 20 years ago. Its definitely a better place to visit as an adult  :sarcastic:

Bliss mate! Many out on the road on Sunday? You definitely picked the day of choice considering the weather (rain!) we had all day Monday. That would not be much fun, particularly with the holiday traffic headed home!

Hahaha!! I can only imagine. Is the olive shop still around the corner of the bakery in Milawa? It’s been a long time since I stopped in that area!

Cheers

Saw some signs for olives so i assume so.

Was a bit of traffic coming back into Melbourne on the way home but not enough to slow anything down thankfully

Got my hands on a pretty minty V7 STi intercooler
eTgO4F3.png

Bit fiddley to install as the HKS turbo outlet is a little bit shorter than a normal VF so everything is shoved over a bit to give enough meat to clamp the elbow onto

Shitter made its first "show" appearance. Sakura Picnic. Actually a really cool event. No awards or anything just several thousand japanese cars in a park and some mates

That’s awesome. I must live under a rock as I’ve never heard of this event! Not that I have anything especially JDM or show pony spec!

How’d the JDM catalogue lifestyle go for you? :P

The shitter is looking awesome, almost like it’s ready to pounce!

Great event Bennie. Its not JDM perse just japanese manufactures. The L series would be a welcome addition. Dont think i saw any pre 90s subarus there and certainly not only show spec cars

Some more things added to the pipeline.
HXH9JYC.png
Gen 4 alloy suspension arms. These are something like 8kg lighter (maybe between the 2 idk) than the gen 3 steel? ones. Same geometry so bolt on however the ABS sensors are different so you will lose ABS if you bolt them on. Im going to see what i can do about retaining ABS so stay tuned. Ive already got a diff mount and ill rebush the upper arms with camber adjustable bushes

Theyre ex japan on a container so like 3 months away lol

Good to know about that show Barbs. Hit me up when it’s on again. This weekend is the Trentham Spud fest and tractor pull. It should be back to what it was prepandemic if the weather holds out. I’ll have the brumby there in the carpark somewhere ;)

Those alloy arms and diff mounts look like a good score! I didn’t know they were even a thing you could get! Are they from a specific Gen4 model or on all models for weight reduction? Going for a clean up and a clear coat application before fitting? Good time to crack into replacing all the suspension bushes! Dad and I did it over two days on my sister’s Gen3 RX. A bearing press is helpful to remove the old bush cases so the new (we used 3 piece Nolthane units) bushes could be fitted. Felt very tight after a wheel alignment.

I’m interested to know how the ABS sensors are different - different physical sensor or different location? If it’s a different sensor it might work with the ABS system as they’re usually just a magnet and coil application. I’ve got a cam angle sensor running my after market cruise control on the brumby because the kits was a family hand me down and was missing the speed pick up sensor.

Cheers

Alloy was on top spec turbo gen 4s afaik maybe only the STi models here in AU.

Yep all bushes and bearings will be replaced. Eventually ill get my STi backing plates for the brembos and proper 190mm handbrake setup for this as well.

The ABS is very different.

Gen 3 uses the traditional tone ring on the CV. Gen 4 has a magnetic pickup in the wheel bearing assembly. Hall effect vs inductive sensors. No buneo. Have seen a yank try the gen 4 sensors in a gen 3 and obviously no bueno. Ive got a japanese magazine that talks about the gen 3 sensor either being bigger or smaller than gen 4 depending on how the translation is feeling on the given day. Wont know whats up until it gets here in a few months unfortunately

There will be a way to work around it - even if it involves moving the tone ring and sensor inboard to the inner CV joint somewhere. This is how a fella on the Ausubaru forum kept the ABS in his twin turbo conversion in an L series (a JDM GT turbo touring wagon, it had everything in it from the beginning!). His setup was quite neat. If he needed to swap a drive shaft the tone ring was tapped off and tapped back into place on the new shaft. I don’t think he ever needed to do that though.

The different sensors used between the gens is interesting. I wonder what the reasoning was, other than to make this conversion not so straight forward for the ABS. Bit like our Pajero - I’ve got a gator air locker to go in the rear end, needs the matching drive shafts. The tone rings have the same number of teeth but are different designs - one seems to be a machined metal ring, the other kind of looks like a bike sprocket from pressed steel. The front shafts use this pressed metal style tone ring so I’m hoping the change on the rear end wont affect the ABS, otherwise a work around will be needed - and it might not be as simple as swapping sensors (if it is an issue I’m hoping this is the fix!).

Do you notice a substantial chance in suspension performance factory steel vs the STi alloy? I realise you’ve experienced front alloys arms, asking as it’s something I could chase up for the RS but then again, it’ll never be an all out performer.

Cheers

Only real benefit of the alloy arms is theyre 2 piece so you can flip the rear mount for a bit of free castor. Otherwise the same bushes on a steel arm will get you 90% of the way there. Theyre mostly a bling item

Different sensors is just technology moving on. Gen 4 sensors are half the size and moving the pickup into the bearing removes several manufacturing steps id assume.

hmm.... maybe an early gen3 (also impreza of that era) hub with flange-mounted tone ring would do the trick?

If the number of teeth was the exact same perhaps. Would involve mounting the sensor in the back of the backing plate if thats even possible with the trailing arm in the way.

At a guess I'd say the GenIII uses and inductive sensor that produces an A/C sine wave output, basically an analogue output. These were faded out as the amplitude (height) of the signal reduces with the speed of the tone ring, making them less accurate at low speed. The module just looks at the frequency (when the signal crosses the 0v line) to work out speed.

The GenIV would most likely use a Hall type sensor that produces a D/C square wave output where only the frequency changes with speed. These sensors require a reference voltage that the sensor switches between reference voltage and ground voltage based on the speed of the tone wheel.
