Correct Jase. The inductive and hall effect sensors will both generate the sine wave input, the only difference is the gen4 sensor has a transistor internal to the sensor to give the block style square wave output, whereas the inductive sensor of the gen3 doesn't change the signal output.
MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it. In process of being stripped and sold off.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon. Scrapped.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. Scrapped.
MY13 BRG, current daily, very nice to drive, small mods to make it even nicer again.

Doesnt matter how they work. They arent compatible.
Either need to get the gen 3 sensor in the gen 4 arm orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Look at a gen 4 module/pump in a gen 3. This would mean swapping the front hubs to the gen 4 hubs which im not against for the bolt in bearings and plug in shafts for the 6 speed.
Based on the quick look ive had at the wiring diagram the wheel speed and G sensors are still wired directly to the module not over CAN so it may be possible. Whether the module still works without some other gen 4 BCM in the loop is another question. I know the gen 4 VSS comes from the ABS so fingers crossed it only uses CAN for output and isnt trying to read anything

D-E accessorie cattledog cos why not
Left japan yesterday on the slowboat so 2 months eta probably

Using this very helpful thread http://www.subyclub....o-3gen-liberty/ Ive been able to retrofit OEM cruise control. Just in time for a drive up to sydney this weekend
Used a bugeye wrx cruise control actuator so it fits in the intake manifold perfectly and the rest of the bits are all regular gen 3 from the wreckers. Didnt take a lot of photos cos its been basically 2 solid days over 2 weekends bent at right angles under the dash. This picture shows absolutely nothing but it is working
Using 7 core trailer wiring is certainly the cheat code and thankfully the car was pre wired for some other kind of accessory so was able to repin the power from that plug directly from the fusebox instead of splicing into things. Swapped in a 4 wire brake switch etc and repinned it all so all oem pins and plugs. Was able to repurpose the stupid JDM clutch switch for the starter by mounting it on the other end of the clutch pedal so works just like oem and turns off when touching either the brake or clutch, and no more clutch in to start the car
While i was dicking around under the dash i pulled the clutch system out to swap in an STI braided clutch line. Thought i was being clever doing it on the bench and bleeding it up in a vice. Didnt work for whatever reason so had to reinstall it all and borrow the misso to work the pedal while i tackled the g clamped bomb of a clutch slave getting it to bleed. Came good in the end
Totally unrelated but my soldering iron had a vistor

Ok time for a photo dump.
Loaded up and left wednesday night. Stopped for a coffee and to top off the tank in Glenrowan
Got into Holbrook around 12:30am. Back on the road at 8am on the way to Gundagai for breakfast
Got into Sydney around 4pm. Thankfully theyve finished the tunnel thats allowed you to completely skip the mess that is Northern sydnen and get straight onto the Pacific Highway going north. Another 90 mins or so and we arrived in the central coast to stay with and OG member Reevesy and had some beers with a few more in the area.
Up at the crack of dawn Friday morning to head up the Newcastle to meet up with everyone else
From there we set off inland over literally the worst roads ive ever seen. The roads were so bad that it shook the bolts holding my power steering reservoir loose! This result in a smoke show and a very angry sounding pump. Thankfully i lasted long enough to get to a nearby servo. Originally we assumed the seals had blown out but thankfully we decided to open the lid up and check the bolts. Crisis averated
From then on the roads thankfully cleared up and the PS held its drinks so got to enjoy some very nice mountain roads and awesome scenery
The top of a very big steep hill so just making sure the car wasnt hating life. It wasnt
We spent the night at the Apsley falls campground which had some awesome views
Wood fired bbq feed and a few tins with some mates was fantastic. Slept in the car and apart from being a bit moist in the morning from breathing it was pretty comfortable.
In the morning the overflow bottle was about 3/4 full from being driven hard. Probably hinting at a blown head gasket under lots of load but it hadnt pushed it out the lid or boiled any so poured it back into the header tank and calling it good
Set off again for another day of cruising
The trip ended somewhere about halfway to the Gold Coast where i split off from the main group to get back to Sydney to knock a few hours off the return home. A massive storm on the coast washed most of the bugs and road grime off
Spent the night in a very cheap Ibis hotel and left Sunday morning around 7:30AM. First time doing the trip solo solo so took the chance to stop for 10 mins at a few places id driven past plenty of times but never been able to stop and look.
Obligatory Bargo sign. Hi Adam
Dog on the tucker box at gundagai
HMAS Otway in Holbrook
Ended up getting home just after 5pm. Cant wait to do it again sometime

Just because we could. We like to catch up 2-3 times a year and this is the first time weve really been able to do that since 2019

Thanks for sharing your epic adventure! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one doing huge kms in a short amount of time to just get away!

Just for something different the engine is out
Getting rid of the GC8 style PS pump and going back to the GD/BH style pump with the remote res. Stock BH high pressure line and the GC8 low pressure line will work quite nicely with the GC8 rack.
The main reason for getting rid of the engine was to get the 6 speed in. Much easier to lift the 6 speed up onto the crossmember then jack the rear up than it is to try and get the box in under the car. Also way easier to install an engine into a waiting gearbox than install a gearbox

The seat i ordered from Japan back in february? Finally arrived this last week. Bit dusty but otherwise minty
Following the FSM i got the seat apart pretty easily. Not a lot holding them together really. Rather than fighting the hog rings i simply cut them off lol
Reattached the good leather to my drivers seat using some small cable ties. Much easier to work with.
Got everything back together and its looking fantastic. Im no upholsterer and its 20 year old material but its 9/10 and im happy
Also forked around and got the 5 speed and associated bits out.
Gen 3s are weird so to get the cv shafts out i ended up having to do this. Probably not required but im used to undoing the lateral arm bolt and swinging the hub out to get enough room to get the shafts out

So six speed and r180 or just a matched r160 again?

Just the matched R160. R180 gen 3 requires custom stuff as no gen 3s came R180 etc. Even the S401 is just an R160
When the time comes ill either run the adaptor shafts or ive heard you can use a Hyundai elantra outer CV joint to use the full R180 shaft with R160 hub splines

3.54 Diff in and rear end reassembled with the new hardware i had left in my stash.
The rear CVs tried their best to be seized into the hubs. Luckily was able to hammer and punch them out. Gave everything a good wire brush and clean up then greased up everything to stop it happening again

Got the 6 speed in! Managed to get the ***** in solo buy picking it up with the engine crane and putting it in though the engine bay. I cant believe how well it worked.
Waiting for my tax return to buy a new clutch then engine is going back in

Good effort getting the six speed in, I’m guessing they’re not easy doing them solo?
What’s the plan in the mean time, tidy up some other bits or buy more bits in from Japan?
Cheers

Was quite easy getting it in through the front. A bit fiddley getting the angle right but did 0 heavy lifting.
Got some new front shafts last night so need to install them then push the car out for a good engine bay wash now that i have a pressure washer again. Hopefully tax comes back this week and can pick up a clutch and get the flywheel machined. Maybe engine in this weekend. Still need to source a new PS pump too but its looking like a shitter gen 4/late GD/GG pump will work

New clutch. Xtreme HD Organic. Still have to get my flywheel machined. Even though a number of places are open on weekends they never have the staff to do flywheels. Pain in the ass
And a replacement power steering pump for the oem one. Turns out the bolt wasnt snapped and its just a through bolt from the back of the pump lol. Oh well not gonna complain about having a 10 year newer pump. Thank you subaru for the parts bin. Exactly the same pump comes on a GR/GH base model impreza. Just need to swap over the gen 3 inlet piece. Gen 3 is on the left.
Cleaned up and bolt into the brand new bracket i got and on the engine
