GC8 control arms?? if so did you use the gc8 sti endlinks onto a B4 swaybar?? as the standard lib links wont work properly, and the GD sti links are too short

are you talking about the GD sti steering rack?? as they arent a straight swap over due to differences in splines....a gc8 sti one will swap over pretty easily though ;)

Saying that, steering rack boots are cheap as (or you could use the wrx boots?)....but make sure theres no play in the inner tie rods as this is common on older racks...easily repaired with new ones though

Though the lib racks are shit compared to a wrx rack or better yet an actual "quickrack" off an RA......i love my quickrack!!

+1, do it once, do it right ;)

at a minimum the dust covers are easy to do...i just dropped my old 4 pots into a brake specialist with the kits and had them back in two hours and it cost $50

I used B4 control arms. Im using B4 hubs and shafts aswell as the STI ones didnt fit and my lib ones got damaged.. Havent tried to fit the sway bars yet but i did notice the connections to the control arms are different..

I do have a B4 front sway bar so that should bolt straight up.

The rack i have is a GD RA.. I did think about just changing out the boots.. So that might be the thing to do.. I just wanted to know if i could use the STI one as if it was better its just sitting there..

Cheers Vice.

Youll need B4 or GC8 sti endlinks as the lib ones dont work too well, they fit but with bad angle etc..i just got new sti ones off a GC8 and some nuts to suit

The GD sti rack wont fit without either a whole steering column replacement or a custom uni joint (this has some legality issues, but hell most of our cars have legality issues lol) due to different spline patterns

If you use the GD power steering bottle and pipework the GC8 sti racks bolt up easily, and can be had for pretty cheap (the standard 2.7 racks that is...the 2.4 RA racks are rare and very hard to find) and ya can probably use the power steering cooler aswell

Sell the GD RA rack on ricenet and get one that works without mods i say, dont pull boots off that, just get new boots as someone will grab that and itll be harder to flog off without boots

Wait, the front sti hubs didnt fit? Why? Im running them on mine? Theyre massive compared to the b4 ones, which id say makes them a lot stronger...i know they dont fit with the stock pressed lib control arms though, but the alloy arms gave me all the clearance i needed

Well they may of fit.. But i didnt take them out the hubs and the Sti hubs do not have ABS sensors since it was a RA edition so i couldnt use them..

Iv compared the Sti shafts with the lib and B4 ones and they all seem the same.. If they are bigger its by a bees dick.. Im assuming thats again a RA thing..

As for the rack ill just use the lib one with a new boot for the mean time..

Had a pretty productive weekend..

Started the day off trying to get the big nuts off the end of all my CV joints as i was going to try use the STI shafts in the B4 hubs.. But after rigging up a nut loosening rig using a spare wheel/crowbar and a big Posted Image'ing pipe.. I got one of the B4 shafts loose and a STI one out.. In the end they turned out to be very different.. The sti one was a different length and had no ABS lugs.. So i had to go back to using the B4 shafts.

One of the shafts i recieved had disconnected itself at the hub end.. Went about getting the boot off and after 3 hours of swearing at the Posted Image'ing C ring i got it in and managed to get the boot back on with its clips all tight..

After that i went about fitting the hubs onto the struts and went about seating it into the alloy control arms..

COuldnt seem to get it back in ??? then called it a day :)

Do you need front hubs?

I have a pair kicking around at mum's. GDB STi, and 99% sure they have ABS.

I just bought the B4 hubs last week.... They are now fitted.. Ill have to brake them before i replace now.. This is my 3rd pair of hubs..

I did get a bit more done tonight tho... Pulled all the pedals out the STI and prepped them to go into the Gen 3..

They where farily rusty like the rest of the half cut so i ended up giving them a quick going over with a wire brush and some can paint...

It's been a massive job... I'm six months in now and I'd say well over 10k in the pit. Gonna be a good day when I finally fire her up.

This makes me feel so much better that i got someone else to do it in five days whilst i drank beer and vegged out on the beach

Though im sure the satisfaction of doing it yourself is awesome

Iv defiantly learnt tons along the way.. I pretty much know 80% of the parts on the car now.. How they connect what they do, how to install/removed them etc..

One of the reasons i took this project up was to keep my mind busy as i was drinking to much piss and wasting my weekends... and its defiantly done that.. Plus iv meet a lot of good people on here in the process.

My hold ups have been waiting for parts/services/money..

Everything where iv had to use a third party has taken time.. Just to get my engine looked at took over 3 weeks.. Now that they have taken it apart and the block has been sent off for work Im assuming it will be atleast another month till i get it back.. The whole process of sending the loom off and getting it back.. even tho AM auto where super fast about it took a couple of weeks..

Ill be realistic about it and id say Feb is a nice target for me to finish..

Iv now got my mums mazda 3 to use as a daily until its finished so the rush is off for the time being..

I probally didnt source enough parts before i started too..

The whole rear hub thing held me up allot as i hadnt really priced that in and fitting a R180 isnt the easiest thing to do..

I likes the pedals and the cluster.

My problem is I want to upgrade parts before I even drive the thing... So it means waiting for more funds etc..

I swear I will have alot of new scars to show off to people also.

so whats the plan have the whole car back together and ready to drop the engine in and drive?

Have you put any more thought into squeezing some more power out of the engine. Like strapping on one of those intake fans

Im well 6.2k gets the engine ready to drop in.. After that all the shop is going to do for me is ..

bolt it in.
make up a FMIC
make up an exhaust
install the fuel pump ( I may do this ) just been putting it off.
Break in and Tune.

Im having the VF34 turbo that came with it tested atm then ill prob sell and upgrade.

I know i will prob need injectors and maybe a few bits here and there so im budgeting 10k from this point on total driving..

He has told me it will be on the road in 6 weeks... So i cant Posted Image'ing wait..

Oh and im having Cruzin take care of my brakes atm too..

Will bring the total of the build to around the 22k mark i think !! But it will end up being a 300awkw lib with 0 K`s on the clock.. So when i compare it to a 20k wrx I think im still coming up ok :)
