Well ill fill you guys in..

As for the solenoid problem Turns out one of the the solenoids was faulty and is being replaced atm.. The dash cluster is now working ( I just had a plug half pushed in under the dash ).. ANd the alternator problem is now sorted..

Sooo Now for the bad stuff..

Turns out a LSD diff I purchased off a Friend of a member on the board was sold to me under the impression that it was a 3.9 ratio.. To match my 6 speed..

After driving the car around the workshop they noticed it was resisting turning and reconised the feeling to be a incorrect dif / g box ratio..

After communicating with the seller and my workshop they ended up pulling the diff apart to find it is a custom ?? 3.5 ratio diff.. They checked this with the markings on the gears themself and by counting the teeth.

Iv been looking up g box ratio charts and I cant seem to see anything thats 3.5 so Im assuming the diff and g box was changed to 3.5 as I was told it was out of a running car..

Any how.. The friend of this member is now refusing refund So im $500 in the bin, And the proud owner of a big paper weight diff.. ( Im assuming its useless at a 3.5 ratio )

They sourced a standard R160 3.9 that was going in today And now just to hope my G box wasnt Posted Image'ed in the process..

Wish me luck.. Posted Image I need some lol.. Im just glad I dont have heart problems or I would of curled over after all this stress..

Out of interest .. Ive herd that If having an incorrect ratio and damaging the Gbox.. It will only break the center diff ?

I wasnt even aware there was one.. Im guessing its the rear part of the g box..

If they have only driven it around the shop, surely it won't be too bad?

I think the centre diff is at the rear

Hi,

That really sucks. I know how upset the member on here is about the situation as well.

Cheers,

So iv done some reading today.. Found out the following..

And yea shit situation for everyone.. Ive got no hard feelings toward him in the slightest..

Your initial understanding of the concept is bang on. Gearing is just maths at the end of day. So, on that diff you've looked at, you need to spin the input shaft 3.545 times to make the outputs go round once (hence the gear ratio being expressed as 3.545:1).

The Impreza geartrain starts with the input shaft, which has the five (or six, plus reverse) drive gears on it. Underneath it is the output shaft which holds the matching driven gears. Look at a transmission chart and you'll see the ratios. Like with your diff, a ratio of 2.00:1 means the input shaft rotates twice for every rev of the output. 1.00:1 means that the shafts rotate at the same speed (and so the drive and driven gears would have the same number of teeth). A ratio of less than 1 means that the output shaft rotates faster than the input; for example with a ratio of 0.75, the output shaft rotates 1.33 times per 1 rev of the input.

The output shaft is connected to the centre diff which splits the power to front and rear. The front output goes direct to the front diff pinion. The rear output, though, runs through another pair of gears (the dropgears) before reaching the propshaft. On many boxes, these dropgears are 1:1 ratio (and so the front diff ratio and rear diff ratios should match). However UK cars commonly have 1.1:1 dropgears, so...
According to the SPDA chart here, that box does have a 4.11 final drive and 1.0:1 dropgears. You'd therefore need a 4.11 rear diff to match it.

The 3.545 diff you've got is from a later UK car. These boxes have a 3.9 front diff and 1.1:1 dropgears (multiply the 3.545 diff by 1.1 drops and you have 3.9, so making the front:rear ratios match).

I was confused by it Because I was looking up g box ratios and they aren't ever going to be a 3.5..

there is defiantly 3.5 rear diffs tho.. There is actually one in the forsale section now..They just have to be used with a 3.9 front gbox ratio with a 1.1:1 drop box on it..

Thats how the RS's run it :) a think a gen2 would have fitted? Guess fitting the r180 would be a bit much work atm?

Bad news and I hope nothing was damaged man. I too know how hard it is for the member you're talking about. He did it out of good will and was shat on. Sad to see that this still happens. You don't know who your true friends are until something like this happens.

I hope you manage to get it all fixed soon enough though as I'm pretty sure EVERYONE is keen to see that beast of a machine complete and on the road. ;)

I have a 3.54 in mine. My gearbox is an JDM 06 STi Spec C which comes with step down gears. Dunno what is for but yeah, the newer boxes run them. The earlier 6 speeds just run the same 1:1 as the gearbox, hence the 3.9 in your case.

Your lucky it was only driven in the workshop. They would have also picked it up on the dyno but as 1 set of rollers would have been spinning quicker than the other set.
