Gotta say Germany played really well.
They were one team I was hoping would take the cup.

And the same isn't so with Ronaldo?
I don't want to start a Ronaldo vs Messi debate, but surely you can reciprocate those statements for Ronaldo, whether he is a crybaby or not.
Ronaldo is so far up himself, he's almost inside out.
He's an underwear model. What else do you expect?
Messi treats his rivals and team mates with respect and doesn't let the pay cheque get in the way - completely the opposite for R.
Even when his own country was ridiculing him (earlier this year), he shrugged it off. Ronaldo just doesn't have that kind of humility.
Never been a Ronaldo fan. Never will be.
Also, Messi uses his left foot. Which he copied off me

How Messi gets a golden boot without scoring a goal, and James from Colombia made the world sing, is completely corrupt.

Well sorry for the confusion, but yep, Messi might be the Michael Jordan of soccer, but he didn't produce on the biggest stage in the universe.
SO he's like MJ circa 88
I also reckon he's embarrassed receiving it.
FIFA: Do as you're told #45321

I disagree about Messi. I think he deserved to win the Golden Ball. Considering how piss poor the rest of the Argentinian team were, there has not been or could be many players that have single handedly got their team to the World Cup final. The only team to impress at the World Cup was Germany and there were no standout players there because everyone in the team did their job.
Agree with all of that 100%. As the Germans will say, we don't need a complete star player as we have a complete team. that Klose is the all time record WC goal score is 1) an absolute travesty and 2) is a testament to the team he's been part for four world cups. it shows what a average (at best striker) can achieve when the whole squad plays effectively and efficiently.
Messi carried that average Argentina side to second place in the World Cup. Not an easy task. He was man of the match in 4 of the 8 games he played and scored the vital goals in 3 of those games that gave them vital wins. Sure he was below what people expected and i'm sure the usual high standard he holds for himself but he was still the best player there.
If you look at his stats they tell a pretty compelling store as well, games 7, goals 4, assists 1, shots per game 3.3, key passes per game 3.3, successful dribbles per game 6.6, fouls against per game 2.6. Over the entire competition he had 242 completed passes (39 more than the next closest player), completed 39 dribbling runs (10 more than the next closest player) and created 21 scoring chances for team mates (more than the next closest player). He was also joint top scored in the group stages. Statistically he was the best player of the tournament. This is a fact.
Of importance to his side, that Argentina made the final playing the way they did, its hard to argue that he wasn't one of the most important to his teams cause either.
Messi is a victim of his own success. In my opinion, rather than look for reasons why he was the best, people make the effort to look for reasons why he wasn't.
I'm by no means a Messi fan boy but to say he wasn't player of the tournament is just silly. It really is.
Edit: to add. there were some other wonderful players at the WC and i don't think it's as cut and dry as look at the stats to make your decision

I still don't think he deserved it. None of the German players beat those stats? If Argentina didn't make it to the final, do you still think he'd get the Golden Ball?

Nah, Ronaldo is a sook. i do agree with Morgz, Messi is genius with the ball at his feet, and he definitely gets shut down by multiples because of it. But he does at club level too, so he's used to it. He just doesnt seem to play with the same kind of devastation at wolrd cup level. Same with Rooney.
Sig worthy.

you do make solid points Aek.
you also seem to have a fork load of stats to back them up. Which makes it hard to have an irrational arguement against.
I still feel he plays better for Barca than 'tina.
pressure maybe? Expectations of a whole country rather than a legion of club fans?
Sig worthy.

How often does Argentina play together as a team? When they do, how often do the players around Messi change?
Barcelona play together all the time and are in a smooth flowing rhythm. I think that helps alot compared to a national team with players coming from all corners of the globe every couple of years...

Sorry, but North Korea won.
I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

I know that Ronaldo is a sook sometimes, especially when he was younger. But it wasn't his fault Portugal didn't make it through.
Even Diego Maradona made statements explaining why he thought Messi didn't deserve to win the Golden Ball... I'm just saying that there were many other players who performed exceptionally well in the World Cup.

Messi will surpass Maradona in no time. I have no respect for people that cheat, although he used to be a very talented player.
