New Motherboard, cpu and ram should do the trick.

Will need a new version of Windows as well. Get a 64 but version to take advantage of the ram. Should be easy to get a nice upgrade for sub 1k

Recommend going Intel i7 if you are editing video. Also as much ram as you can justify.
Video editing is hungry on system resources.
Certainly upgrade it to win7 64 bit.

Thanks very much for the suggestions everyone, it's basically what I had in mind.
Any recommendations on mobo?
Also I wish to get a front USB 3.0 port, things to consider?
Could I get away with an i5 or does the i7 yield overall better performance?
How much ram minimum?

Thanks.

For the mobo, i've used Asus, Gigabyte and the latest one is an Asrock, never had issues with any of these.

Front USB 3 depends on the mobo and the the case you get.

The i5 is fine, i'd only justify the i7 if you need the extra performance for CPU-heavy tasks, and if you have the budget for it.

Ram depends on what you're doing, I feel 8GB is still fine for most tasks these days.

I'll be using my current case.
I'm leaning towards ASUS based on their reputation, as that's why I have other hardware from them.
I guess I'll just see how the tasks are being handled before adding more ram sticks. :)
As I said I won't be using this setup for gaming and even if I did I'm an old skool gamer so it'll more than handle it, but if the i5 is significantly cheaper than i7 then I'll go i5.

Thanks a lot for a very clear and opinionated reply.

Keep em coming anyone if you wish to suggest anything. :)

Cheers.

Finally found the time to upgrade my laptop to Windows 10. First impressions, I really like it. Microsoft Edge hasn't convinced me yet as a browser though. There are a few small bugs I've noticed but I'm sure they'll be squashed soon enough.

I have also noticed my laptop runs better and quicker, which is another benefit due to it being quite old.

Im still impressed with Windows 10 after nearly a week of it. Don't think I will go back to 7 now.

Yep. Happy as Larry with windows 10. It's only small differences from 7, but I'm rather happy with it.

Can't give any real performance clarification as I bought a new system to go with it though.

I did have a error when using the upgrade tool. Turns out it's very common and you just need to change your locality settings to get around it.

Time to liven things up around here.

I'm in the process of doing my own PC build. I've got a couple of mates involved and so far we've got two separate builds; one on a budget and the other letting go a bit. The difference between them is about the $300 mark at the moment.

Build 1 - Machine

  • CPU - Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($425.00)
  • Motherboard - ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING Mini ITX LGA1151 ($269.00)
  • Memory - Kingston FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 ($105.00)
  • Storage - Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($205.00)
  • Video Card - ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Founders Edition Video Card ($699.00)
  • Case - Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop Case ($125.00)
  • Power Supply - Silverstone 500W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply ($129.00)

  • Total Cost - $1,957.00

Build 2 - Budget Machine

  • CPU - Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($306.00)
  • Motherboard - ASUS H170I-PRO Mini ITX LGA1151 ($215.00)
  • Memory - Kingston 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 ($47.00)
  • Storage - Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($155.00)
  • Video Card - ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Founders Edition Video Card ($699.00)
  • Case - Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop Case ($125.00)
  • Power Supply - Silverstone 500W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($105.00)

  • Total Cost - $1,652.00

What do you guys think? Anywhere I can improve on or perhaps cut down on to save some money? None of these builds include peripherals like the mouse, keyboard, monitors, etc.

Build 1 looks good, I'd swap out the CPU for a i7-6700k 4.0GHZ, and maybe swap the 1070 card out for a RX480, if you're planning to play 1080 @ 60fps. The 1070 is good, but overpriced for the performance. Maybe bump the power supply to 750w, and add a CPU cooler like the Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler $71.99

Wouldn't bother with build 2. Go hard or go home

Personally I think an i7 is overkill for most games. I'm still using a first gen I5 overclocked haha. +1 for non stock cpu cooler, my hyper212 evo has been the best thing I bought for my pc. Makes it so much quieter and allows me to oc.

Oh yeah, deffo overkill, but good future proof processor in case he wants to step up to 4K or VR. Just have to swap the graphics card out for something with a bit more punch, like a GTX1080 or similar.

I want to get a good build to keep me going for the next 5+ years.

Build 1 looks good, I'd swap out the CPU for a i7-6700k 4.0GHZ, and maybe swap the 1070 card out for a RX480, if you're planning to play 1080 @ 60fps. The CPU you mentioned just gives me the ability to overclock it right? What would be the difference in price? I'm pretty keen on sticking with GeForce but I will explore your recommendation Shaz. Cooler was planned but I forgot to add that to the build.

Thanks for the feedback. ;)
