Time for an upgrade I think?

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

So I have decided I need to have a "smart" home. So I am getting all the rooms wired with cat 6 data cable and also wireless throughout.

The problem I am having is the design of my nas media server. I am wanting to have this built but the requirements are
- able to be used in every room (hence the data cable)
- large storage capability
- easy to use / easy interface
- remote control only with the tv - I don't want a mouse and keyboard with the tvs.

So my setup I am thinking is

Motherboard
- Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H or
- Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H

CPU
- Intel i5-4670 ot
- intel G3420

DDR3
- Kingston HyperX 8Gb

SSD - for operating system
- Kingston HyperX 120Gb

HDD
- WD Red NAS EFRX SATA3 4TB (will have 8 of these with potential for 16)

PSU
- Corsair 80 Plus gold RM750

UPS
- Kstar BM3120-1200VA

PCI-E
- Unsure

Operating System
- Ubuntu??

Questions are:
- what am I missing? I believe the parts should work together
- is anyone using Ubuntu? any feedback?
- what is the best option for running this through the TV's?

Thanks

Rhys

QNAPs are great for this - no operating system to administrate either. I can watch stuff on it from my htpc, smart TV, AC Ryan media player or mobile device via Plex. Gives you plenty of options.

I had a look at the qnaps and they looked great. I had a number of people tell me to get one but the price for the level of storage i want was quite high. Plus i like the idea of building one so i can upgrade parts when needed.

But the idea of no operating system i like.. make life easier

My mistake, they are actually 4x 2GB sticks so 8gb total.

I could sell you 2 of them for say $50?

They look like this but 2gb sticks

How much would you want for it just out of curiosity? I've got two spare slots in my iMac and wouldn't mind maxing it out. However I'm not sure whether it'd be entirely necessary.

Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

Can you hook a brother up? Please contact me now. I have cash ready.

If I could get $100 I would be happy.

Do you know if it would work in a mac?

I couldn't tell you. I'd have to see what I've currently got in mine as I'd like to run the same brand/model.

I'll let you know as soon as I get home.

I'm about 90% sure that won't work in a mac.

According to the Apple website, this is the only one I can install (it must meet ALL of this criteria):

  • PC3-10600
  • Unbuffered
  • Nonparity
  • 204-pin
  • 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM

For the iMac (Mid 2010) and iMac (Mid 2011) models, use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

Hey dudes, any of you seen this?

http://www.unotelly.com/unodns/

It is to get US channels and stuff outside of the US.

Was thinking of setting it up and trying it out on my TV at home, Sony W800A, instead of getting a WD TV or Apple TV thing.

Any comment?
