Hi,

Understood.

Cheers,

OpenSSL is an open source (free) certificate. A single domain SSL secured through a verified certificate authority usually cost a couple hundred dollars.

Yours looks to be a certificate issued by Geotrust so you're fine.

Any good laptop deals going at the moment?

Bought my first in 2009 (Dell) and it lasted until about a year ago when WiFi stopped working and the screen fell off. It's now my media centre hub running through the TV.

Dad brought home an ex-work HP which I've been using ever since which is awesome because free and was about $3k new in 2009. However, as I'm doing more freelance drafting work, 2GB ram and 150GB storage isn't quite cutting the mustard.

Only problem is, I'm on a real budget (<$1k).

Don't really care about brands

Prefer Win8.1 as I've heard it's a whole bunch better than Win8

Already have Office2013 so that's done

Decent sized screen for drafting but skinny/portable enough to take to clients

Minimum 8GB ram

Minimum 500GB storage

I know nothing about graphics and stuff..

Any suggestions out there?

Does it have to be a laptop? Laptops really limit you when it comes to the things you actually need to run complex CAD programs, not to mention they are more difficult to upgrade hardware if you ever need to.

I know :(

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere for a desktop to live at the moment.

Plus, you can't take a desktop to client's!

True. I haven't looked into laptops for years since owning my last one man. I'm no help.

So I have decided I need to have a "smart" home. So I am getting all the rooms wired with cat 6 data cable and also wireless throughout.

The problem I am having is the design of my nas media server. I am wanting to have this built but the requirements are

- able to be used in every room (hence the data cable)

- large storage capability

- easy to use / easy interface

- remote control only with the tv - I don't want a mouse and keyboard with the tvs.

So my setup I am thinking is

Motherboard

- Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H or

- Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H

CPU

- Intel i5-4670 ot

- intel G3420

DDR3

- Kingston HyperX 8Gb

SSD - for operating system

- Kingston HyperX 120Gb

HDD

- WD Red NAS EFRX SATA3 4TB (will have 8 of these with potential for 16)

PSU

- Corsair 80 Plus gold RM750

UPS

- Kstar BM3120-1200VA

PCI-E

- Unsure

Operating System

- Ubuntu??

Questions are:

- what am I missing? I believe the parts should work together

- is anyone using Ubuntu? any feedback?

- what is the best option for running this through the TV's?

Thanks

Rhys

Look for an Asus, not sure the model number for mine but I have a touch screen with i7-4500U, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd + 24GB ssd for around the $1100 mark.

There's an app on android called unified remote, not sure how good the linux support is but it's a good replacement for mouse + keyboard.

Ubuntu is OK, it's probably the most simple version of linux you can run.

You can run something like XBMC media server and connect TV's up to it, or something like plex media server if it's a smart TV.

If you're able to find out the model number for me that would be cool.

I like the touch screen idea!

I was looking at XMBC but couldn't find much info on it for what I want. I was looking at plex. My understanding is that you can use your other devices to watch/access your media if logged in.

all the tvs are new smart tvs.

This looks like the one https://www.asus.com...ivoBook_S551LB/

I've seen it for $1130 in Jb and I think $1080 at dick smiths, probably best to shop around

Yeah I run plex on my pc, have a LG smart TV that picks up the plex media server and can stream from the computer. I do this through a 1gbit wireless router with no issues (only tried 720p- might be better going wired connection for 1080p)

+1 Plex. So long as your on the same network it works really simply, will simply auto detect. Plus it downloads meta data and makes everything look pretty automatically

Orright need a hand in a video card upgrade.

System is a Gigabyte P35-D3SL, Intel E8400 (overclocked to 3.6ghz if that matters?), 8GB Ram.

Video card is an Nvidia 8600GT - nothing really wrong with, just getting old (fans staring to make a noise) and sick of running games in low etc.

Want to run games in decent resolution and have it last a few years till a mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade.

Budget of $400 (absolute max, as in $401 has just blown the budget) - but the less the better.

Have done abit of research and Raedon R9 270x/280x/290x (290x is way out at the moment - but apparently wait till different cooler versions and the prices will drop?) seems like they are best bang for buck.

Also Nvidia GTX 760/770's seem pretty good too.

Any others I'm missing or should be looking at?

Whats more important in video cards - memory or core clock?

Ta for any input.
