Ahh ok. Could probably get a new set of 22E heads for peanuts if theyre fubar
Luckily the wreckers I go to has just gotten a s2 wagon that I can grab the heads off, if not they have a s1 that looks like it was left in a field for a while.

Another new pair of head gaskets, 2 sets of head bolts and skimmed heads later the car work without any obvious problems or overheating. Will have to take it easy on tomorrow's cruise and hope nothing bad happens.

Damn that engine bay looks clean!
This is really starting to come together man!
MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Everything went well today, no problems with the car and only a little of oil in the overflow bottle which probably got in there when everything was apart.
What did the 2.2 head gaskets set you back?
The Subaru pair were $214 and the other brand denso, which I got through a head specialist were roughly $100. I was able to get the valves tested, new headgaskets, heads mechained and new head bolts all for $350

A month on and the engine is still working smoothly, apart from a few noises which I havn't had time to find the source of. Oil and Coolant levels have barely moved at all.
Of course with the engine problems cleared up another problem has to take it's place..
Enter diff whine / grinding.
There's been a noise coming from just infront of the gearstick that only appears while accelerating in drive. At first it was quite and I was able to ignore it but now it's really bad and starting to appear while decelerating. I took it to a local subaru mechanic who agreed straight away that it was the bearings on the diff had worn out.
I've got a few options of how I can fix the noise. Replacing the whole gearbox with another auto one has been my main option because it seems the simplest out of them all. Others that i've thought about are trying to replace the diff bearings if it's possible or waiting it out till august and converting it to manual.
If anyone has any suggestions i'd be happy to hear them.

This seems like a good idea to me, except is there any chance the gearbox / bearings could fail by then? I've got a fair bit of time between now and then so i'll probably be able to source everything in time. Or just find a wrecked fwd manual gen1 for cheap.
Manual fo sho if you think itll last?
Take robs old box and setup off him? Thats if its not already gone
His is awd though, I have to try to do it as quick as possible and adding all the rear driveline will take a fair whack of time.

Convert it to AWD while youre at it?

GX should already be AWD.
Edit: Maybe pre facelift trim variants are different, weird.
In that case, fuel tank, subframe, tailshaft and bobs your uncle!

Some Series2 GX's were FWD. Ex-gf's brother had one. Was optional in Gen Juan, Gen2 AWD was across the board.
