Thanks guys, I'm glad how the bay turned out hopefully no more coolant overflows that dirty it up.
What do you want for it? Not fussed about the aerial as I don't listen to the radio anyway.
Pm coming

That a shame, hopefully it'll be a HVC15
Sad update on the car... Headgasket has finally failed and the car keeps on overheating. Coolant system is pressurised instantly and the thermostat doesnt open before it overheats. Top hose is almost rock hard and very hot while bottom one is cold but still hard.
Can anyone suggest a brand that I should look at or should I just try going genuine? I will be hopefully replacing them without removing then engine as i dont have an engine hoist or any room to work on it in the garage.
It seems to come at the worst time as I was possibly about to sell it and buy a RS turbo, guess that'll have to be pushed back

Go genuine. SOHC is doable in the bay apparently. Its really not that hard as im finding out. Just daunting

Pick up a whole other car or engine for the cost of gaskets etc and just swap it over?
Posted 20 November 2014 - 12:17 PM
He doesn't have a crain to swap engines but that is a less involved process to some extent. Gaskets are pretty cheap now. I got most of my head and other gaskets for 226 delivered from the USPick up a whole other car or engine for the cost of gaskets etc and just swap it over?

True, not having a crane could put a damper on things. Light engines though could almost lift the bare long motor in place by hand . I picked up the 1st gen 20G I chucked in my first R for $380 incl courier from interstate. What's a 22E worth, $70?

Thanks guys, it would've made it much easier if I had an engine crane but I guess i'll just have to make do. I've been slowly disconnecting parts over the week whenever I had a few hours free. I wasn't able to find any possible replacement engine for sale anywhere local for under $450 so decided on just putting new gaskets in it.
Got all the less fiddly parts off the engine in preparation of removing the manifold and timing belt.
Timing belt and manifold off early on Saturday morning, also emptied all the oil out and double checked for any areas I missed.
I've read on many different websites you can do the head gaskets on these engine without pulling the engine, all you have to do is push it sideways to get more room.
Instead of this we decided to take the heads off without even undoing the engine mounts or jacking up the car. I guess we were lucky.
First one came off quite easily, though we were surprised at how tight the bolts were done up.
The coolant passages were really grubby, everything covered in scale and at some points it even bridged to either side.
Then it was time for the other side. This one seems like there was less space near the back of the heads but with a fair bit of rubber mallet and positioning, it finally was out.
And the engine was left to be cleaned some time soon.
The valves were set to be the first parts cleaned, they started out covered in old gasket and rust / buildup.
And turned out decent for only a few minutes of scraping and cleaning with carby cleaner.
That's all for now, will probably we receiving the new gaskets sometime during the week, and hopefully we have everything back together and running in a few weekend time.

Nice work. Yep those head bolts are tight as they do have to hold in a few thousand explosions

Great work, Tim.

More work done over the weekend but unfortunately due to the wrong part being sent only one side got put back together. Replacement has been sent and will be here sometime during the week and will be put in on the weekend.
Everything was given a big clean and I scraped out most of the scale in the coolant passages.
With everything done to the engine that could've been we went to the wreckers to see if we could find any extras for the car and came back with this.
It was off a n/a bugeye and with a bit of welding of flanges and extending the pipe on the muffler it fit and looks much better than the canon. Also had the extra of a resonator to replace the rusty centre muffler. Too bad I can't test it...

Nice work. So much room for activities in a gen juan 22 bay

Wow, doing nicely. Once repaired it should be a pretty reliable run about if you then sell it to buy your RS, but honestly, after spending the time on it you might feel like keeping it.
Nice muffler.

Got sent the wrong part again, so have given up on the seller and going genuine which I should've done first off.
Unfortunately that means I have to wait till monday and also take the other gasket that we already installed out.

What a pain in the butt!
How'd it all come together?

Not good. Put everything back together, started the car and the timing was slightly out and there was a slight knocking noise. Changed timing and started it again this time the knock was gone but it was replaced by exhaust leaking into the oil.
Im taking it all apart tomorrow for the heads and gaskets to be checked over by a mechanic who will also do some test.
Fingers crossed this will be the end of it and I can get it all back together successfully.

Exhaust leaking into the oil??? That seems really odd

When we opened the oil filler, it was full of exhaust fumes / white smoke. It's been suggested one/some of the valves are becoming stuck open but we'll see what the mechanic has to say.
