Yeah, I've heard of reversing the polarity on a TIG and that puts the heat in the tip so you burn the tip out quicker, but can weld coke cans together. or metal that thin.  i dunno I've never TIG'd before, but from what I've seen, and peoples I've talked to MIG and stick welding seems to be the go for car body panels 

You can do that but the tungsten will just burn up similar to a stick rod. MIG is mainly used because its such an easy form of welding that anyone can do (Not trying to offend anyone here), because it is simply point and press the trigger. TIG requires a bit more skill from the user

 

He said the problem with TIG is it's very concentrated heat.

I guess it's all in the experience and skill of the operator.

That roof will never look good.

 

Yeah it can be a  very concentrated heat, and as you said it's the skill of the welder involved, but also the equipment as well.

We have one good Lincoln that has about 20-30 different knobs and buttons for settings, half of which I wouldnt have a clue about. But played around with the settings and I  ended up being able to weld 0.8mm stainless sheet.

 

Stainless will also warp a hell of a lot more then mild steel as well, so as long as you kept the steel cool by having wet rags either side of where you are welding, amps down low , and move the weld pool extremely fast you wont have any trouble with it.
