Just got back from an interval 1 service at 162000 Kms.

Two problems they (Eblens Subaru S.A.) brought to my attention;

1) RHR Shock absorber leaking - needs to be replaced:
Can I do this myself?? Suggestions for an after-market suitable brand that's close to stock spec.?
They quoted me around $300 for a replacement and around $150 to fit it.

2) Exhaust leak from front engine Y-Pipe:
They said they'd have to take off the heat shroud (welded on) to pin-point the leak and then see if it's able to be re-welded OR replace the pipe.
Once I queried him on cost he said it looks like this model has independent Left/Right pipes back to the Cat. but I'd be looking at around $900 to replace them plus labour.
Suggestions for remedies?
Second hand/wrecker - After-market new - Find a mate with a welder and go gung-ho???

After market is probably better, when i cracked the centre pipe on my exhaust Subaru wanted insane money for a replacement, i got one custom made in stainless for a fraction of what they wanted total cost including fitting ended up being only 170 quid.

For the shock, it should only take 1- 2 hrs (both sides), you'll need: jack, axles stands, couple of spanners (14, 17, 19mm come to mind), torque wrech is handy too & spring compressors. be good idea to do both rears and replace springs aswell. there's numerous threads here and oz bout which brands (shocks/springs) to use. I'd be suprised if you couldn't find a pair for the $300 you were quoted for 1. For the exhaust atleast go see an exhaust mob and get their opinion and a quote. thats my 2c anyway :drinks:

I went and got some new tyres (2) and spotted a D&T Performance shop on the way home and dropped in. He got out the book and found two pieces that made up the Y section from the engine to the cat. LHS was $890, and RHS was $222. Shortly after soiling myself he suggested we put it up on the hoist and rip the heat shroud off and take a look. He found a hairline crack around the LHS pipe and welded it up and charged me $50. Thanks Pete at D&T. Didn't give it any stick on the way home cause it's stinking hot & had the A/C on. Tomorrow morning on the way to work (4.45am) I will be able to see if there is any difference in throttle response/performance. What I did notice is that the 60Km/hr in 4th gear throttle surge is gone.... could have been ECU "not computing" incorrect O2 sensor readings??? Will double check tomorrow. Dropped into Pedders (two doors down from D&T) and asked about shocks, quoted me $107 each for two rear "Comfort Gas Shock"s and $185 to fit them both... $399 worth the money considering I'd have to buy the tools needed to "attempt" it myself??? Asked my brother because he messed around with cars a lot in his younger days, he told me they are very difficult to do and he'd pay to get them done (now), which didn't fill me with confidence for a DIY project..... P.S. Bridgestone wheel alignment = $65 - Is that normal??

Wow props to D&T for spotting that and being honest with you. Now he/they know you and your car id be taking it back to them when other issues surface! From the D&T quote + the Pedders quote, id say you were definitely getting ripped from the previous mob! Bloody dealers!! $65 sounds about right for an allignment. I pay $30 for mine but only because i get 50% discount coz dad's company is in the same complex as Bobby Jane.

Hehe, the dealers service center guy tried to make me feel better by telling me the exhausts on new Suby's are around the $3000 mark.....
Mind you, the original exhaust on mine is S/S, which surprised the D&T guy as to why it had a crack in it, but then later said - well, it's 10 years old and must have endured some excessive heat, even for an exhaust.....

Not having a go and I'm sure other will agree, that, having done it myself I can honestly say its pretty easy. There's a really good DIY by "Subaru" on here somewhere which is what I used to do mine (by myself), Dad and I did their Foz without any instruction just using what I learnt from the DIY thread. And it's a good excuse to buy tools... + $185 = 3 cases of beer.... enough said! *edit* Nice choice of tyre ;)

Going searching for "Subaru" started threads now.... thanks for the heads up.

As long as the tools I'll need cost less than $185 then I should end up in front. :)

*Edit: Just noticed on the 'Tyre Maintenance Book' that Bridgestone gave me they suggest 36 psi for both front and rear tyres....... My rears aren't theirs, but still they recommend 36...
May have to query them about measuring hot or cold. :scratch_one-s_head:

Does sound cheap.

Boge used to be std fitment on BMW sport models in the '80s.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Do you know if they are the same type? "Turbo" or part No.'s
28-B82-A (Front Right)
28-B83-A (Front Left)
28-B84-A (Rear Left & Right)

Also, do you have lowered springs? Just wondering if the shock type is relevant to spring type, or do all shocks fit any size spring???

Just got a quote for some KYB's: Rears: #341275 - $88 each ($176) Front R: #334273 - $150 Front L: #334274 - $150 That's $476 supplied without fitting or Wheel Alignment. Makes the Boge 4 for $275 supplied look good... But the KYB's would have to better wouldn't they??? Considering the price difference?? Entry level Low King Springs @ $140 a pair ($280). Approx. 1&1/2 inch drop (37.5mm). Not sure if I have that much available...

AFAIK, KYB are factory fitted (can anyone confirm?)so I would think they would feel stock. I've only heard good things about Boge.

Not sure about Boge, but surely for that price you won't get much better bang for buck - especially considering they're going to be a brand new set of struts replacing your 10yr old ones in the car now!

Just checked my invoice the rears are as you stated. Fronts im unsure of the part number coz i bought them at a later time but are the "turbo" model.

Im running lowered king springs front n rear. Ive got the KSFL-22(93-07 Impreza)(yes they fit perfectly) in the front and KSRL-27(Gen3 n Gen 4 only) in the rear.

Heres how it sits...
