Anyhoo, sorted out some niggles with the ecu setup and car today. I couldn't get the A?C compressor to cut in which turned out to be a mismatch in the type of overtemp sensor on the compressor. Bypassed that and all's good there but the fans do not engage when the A/C cuts in. Ended up using another Aux out bridged to the fan Aux out and that was sorted also. Next problem was that the fans would come on with accessories. This turned out to be an odd back feed through the fan relay control wires that I had not experienced before on a subaru. Turns out that wiring changes made in the series 2 revision of Gen 2 wiring harnesses included integration of the A/C wiring harness and changes to the ecu that meant bridging the fan relay outputs allowed one fan relay to operate on accessories. I overcame this by routing this fan relay control wire through another ignition switched relay. It's always these little things that eat up time.

It'd make sense if you read the bit where it said "on 92 octane". On 95/98 octane it runs perfectly, pulls like a train and is tractable in any gear from walking pace. The point being that they are tuned on the limit of detonation from factory and therefore are difficult to improve on in that regard.

Fair enough.
I wouldn't have expected that to be an issue on an NA engine running fairly reasonable (10:1?) static compression.

10.7:1 comp ratios do not get on well with 92 octane and lots of timing. If they had tuned it to run on crap fuel then it would run fine but have a lot less power. Simple.

I think it sounds a bit like a VW R32. From what Tristan said the tune happens on Monday.

Those R32's sound pretty hot. Yeah saw the thread on Ozlib saying he missed out on his tune. Should be interesting to see what numbers it puts down. I'd be interested to see what kinda torque it puts out.

Yea it's...................OK.
If he had the system you have it would have been awsome, yours sounds unreal. And if he wanted it quieter VAREX FTW.

Yeah they need to be loud. Mine is pretty loud(as you have heard :D ) but you can hardly hear it on the highway. When did you see the car? There was talk of a replacement exhaust on friday.

That would have been on Thursday night.
I think Tristan's winging about the humidity was louder than the car.
Needs more noise and less restriction Big Al. You'd agree I'm sure.

ladies... just a quick one, cos the computer i'm using sucks balls... got the dyno tune done... car is being strangled big time by the (tiny) 2" exhaust... but unless either al or myself can source one for tomorrow (i'm heading back up there for a final check on the car), and get it fitted it in time for me to get back to the dyno, it will have to wait till i get back into sydney before i do anything further (i've got the name and number of the vipec tuner in sydney) car made 122kw atw... (33-36 degree ambient temp mind you... seemed much much better when the air is cooler in the evening) though there is clear potential for more power... i'm still hopeful of at least 140 atw... and although that power figure sounds low, the power spread from 4500 (when vtak kick in yo [and holy shit does it kick]) to the premature redline of 7000rpm (will make more power up to 7500, but needs better exhaust flow) is about 10kw... it's making over 110kw through that whole rev range and over 115 for most of it... tractive effort is also above 3000N through that rev range boy does it pull hard... and it hardly noticed when i chucked a few more passengers for a bit of a cruise... even off cam it pulls harder than my old motor... i just hope the cutover doesn't catch me off guard in the wet some time... (power jumps from about 70kw to 110kw in about 200rpm) more to come!!

AWD. You'll be fine. Even in teh turboze charged cars (that are more powahz) peeps get no wheel spinnage ;D Haha, good stuff tristan mate. Get some coin for a decent bloody exhaust, not some pea shooter.

Bummer, bit short the figures you were hoping for. 3 THOUSAND neutons is a tidy figure though....

Well short on power methinks. Posted on OZlib Here is a summary of all my mods. I can’t state enough how ecstatic I am with this car now, it really does feel like a $100,000+ sports/luxury car. I liked my MY07 3rb “out of the box” and was a little hesitant to get some mods done at first. Initially I was hoping for a slightly more aggressive exhaust note, extra power would have been just a bonus but what I ended up with is simply phenomenal. Firstly I took the car to Mark at Exhaust Technology on Goodwood Road in Kings Park SA. There I had some custom tuned headers fitted together with 2 x high-flow st steel cats, a hi flow st steel magnaflow resonator and 2 x st steel magnaflow boxes with twin tips. Piping is mild steel 2.5” into twin 2.0”. Total cost here was $2,550. (See pics below) They did an excellent job, at idle and off throttle you can barley hear the motor but under load its deep and aggressive, much more so than standard and with no boominess. From 4,000rpm to redline its like my own nascar. Have a listen! The car was taken straight around to Sean at S & J Automotive on Woodlands Tce in Edwardstown SA and put straight on the dyno which read 131kw atw (127kw is the standard reading). After ecu reset it read 137kw so we can assume the exhaust added around 10kw atw. After retune with Ecutek type 4 the result was 149kw so we can assume roughly 12kw for the ecutek. This equates to +22kw over factory! (See dyno below) The cost of Ecutek was $1,950. This re-tune is essential for a significant exhaust mod such as this and the guys at S & J have spent a phenomenal amount of R & D hours on libs to perfect this tune. Sean told me to drive it for a couple of weeks and bring it back so they could make some final adjustments and get my feedback on it’s drivability. After driving around for a couple of weeks I took the car back to S & J and mentioned a couple of things that I wanted to change: 1) It was a bit to aggressive off the mark, which was good for straight line drags but for stop start city driving I found it to be a bit “loose” and too touchy. 2) It felt a bit flat at around 3,200-3,800 rpm. At first I thought maybe it had gone backward torque wise as this is where it used to begin to pull, but it turns out this was mainly due to there being so much more power before and after that point. Also a mechanical engineer (who posts on this forum) pointed out to me that power (in watts) = torque x revs (in rads/sec). Therefore torque = pwr/revs. Therefore if pwr increases at a given rev, it follows that torque must have increased as well as power is the resultant combination of torque and revs. Other than these things the car drove and sounded like a beast, especially in the 4,500 to redline. Sean fixed the things I asked for whilst adding some more mods (see below). 1) He said that the ecu was about 25% more aggressive from standard off the mark and he pulled that back to about 15% which made it much more smooth off the mark. 2) He changed some timing values through the mid-range and now there is no more apparent flat spot. The car now pulls away with a smooth aggressive shunt from any rev in any gear with no lag and pulls like a Jumbo Jet all the way to red-line with a porches-like sound. My misses says it’s like taking off in a plane. The ecutek has removed the throttle blip after gear change so revs fall the instant you mash the clutch pedal in. I’m in heaven. Oh and apparently I’ll get better fuel economy as well……who cares!!!!!!!!!! MORE MODS On the second trip to S & J I had fitted: 1) STI springs 2) STI short shifter 3) Whiteline 22mm rear swaybar and heavy duty links. The car is now complete. The sti springs seem to make the car sit perfectly. I don’t notice the gap above the front wheels as I used to. It always looked too big compared to the gap at the back. The ride is slightly firmer but still quite palatable and smooth. It’s by no means a bone shaker but f$%k this thing handles well. With the new sway bar the back end tucks in tight through corners now and sits flat as a tack, there’s just no camber or twist in the body. The sti short shifter has a really nice expensive solid feel to it. The total cost here was $1,955. The car is now perfect. Its like driving a really expensive luxury/sports car for a fraction of the cost. Total mod cost was $6,455. I don’t consider this too bad considering the overall transformation of the car. I have driven an sti lib and imo mine is a much better drive. The linearity of acceleration and power is so sweet, I’m not a big fan of turbo lag and sound like this will never come out of the exhaust of a 4cyl. Long live the h6!
