ok, i sent AM an email about getting an engineers certificate... Al doesn't seem to think it's possible to get one in NSW with an aftermarket ECU, as they are apparently illegal here...

i'm going to research this a little more...

EDIT:

it seems that so long as it passes emissions tests and the ECU is locked after tuning, it should be legal...

so... yeh :D

edit again:

AHHH!!! i'm going to stop reading forums regarding this and call an engineering place...

now i'm reading that Aftermarket ECUs are not ADR approved and therefor fail...

maybe they just won't check it... or i'll play dumb and hope they don't notice that it's there...?

worst case is that this becomes a very expensive lesson/track car... *sniff*

HA!

I imagine that he won't be stoked when he finds out what his boy is spending so much money on!

Now, not to say that Tristan shouldn't do the conversion, but if I were intersted in more power and had received a quote the size of his for a conversion, I'd be trading in my current ride and using the difference to upgrade to something that came standard with a turbo or an H6.... considering that I'd probably have about 20 grand to play with...

But hey, that's just me...

Let him have his fun boys. You're all trying to save him money, we know that, he knows that, but he's not going to listen to you anyway so you could atleast be supportive!

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

just throwing in my thoughts here. you do realise you can get 3.0rb libertys for under $30k now? why don't you save up some more cash and buy a car thats a great all round package already out of the box??? think of how much better it will be to mod the car when its got all the gear there ready to go! on top of that in a couple years time you will still get some resale, if you havent been looking check out the cars for sale sections on ozliberty, rslib, rexnet, ozfoz etc etc and see how much people are getting for their cars with $1000's spent on them. in most cases its less than what you would get for a stock car. i understand where you are coming from saying that its something different and unique thats great, but really think it out real good get all the facts down. if i were you i'd either save up and sell current car get something later, or spend <$8000 and get a faster/proven reliable/efficient option with a hell of a lot less stuffin around. i've wanted to convert my car for years now i'm on the current p plate restrictions but i've stuck it out and collected parts on the way and upgraded its and pieces, now i've got everything ready and i'm on my blacks in a month and a half... with my conversion starting in a couple weeks. last thing you want is to go spending a stack of cash and then once its all done you sitting there going holy sh*t what have i done... term deposit that $15k and make cash off it! and if all your money is going to savings keep saving, just dont blow it all on your car then your just back in square one... my $0.02. cheers.

i don't know what you're all yammering about... i've already payed the deposit... this is going ahead no matter what you say...

and my dad doesn't care... he admits that he'd never do anything like this, but he is still mildly supportive...

and i know i can go get a big, fat, ugly gen4 with an H6 in it already... but 30k is really rather close to twice what i'd have what even if i did sell my car... i thought long and hard about this before i actually committed to anything (albeit, forgetting some important details, as you all know)... i really like my car, i think it's the best looking of the libertys and i don't really want an impreza as i don't like the hype that comes along with them... and if i was going to spend my (say) $20k on a different car... i'd probably want a honda... as, IMO, they are really the only japanese cars that go hard in NA form... and no, poop, i don't want a dunnydoor... i'd rather a falcon TBH... but it's a different driving experiance that i'm not really looking for... i prefer the lighter, go-kart like handling of my liberty...

at the end of the day, my car will look better (when i get it fixed up) and go harder than any lard-arsed gen4 NA would... and if i decide later "oh god, what did i do?? it's too slow!" then i can strap some twins on it and it'll go like the clappers...

i've been reading about people who are making 300kw+ reliably from these motors, with standard internals...

where's the support for someone trying something different and stepping away from the 'norm'??

just cos it's a subaru doesn't mean it needs to be turbo to be fast..

p.s. thanks everyone for trying to look out for me, and save me some money... but since when has modifying cars been a cheap hobby?

You make some good, If uninformed points. I was joking when i said get a Commo... If you spend some coin on the motor, i,e: Higher compression Ported heads Custom grind cams valves/valve springs good exhaust/intake (Looking into ITB's if you're really wanting to go balls out. Expensive but will really help with an NA) I don't see why the EZ30 can't do 250kw@w in NA form. It'll have to rev pretty hard, but meh. Cars are never cheap as you say, thus all the more reason to research and spend money wisely.
