Remove it and see if the thread is stuffed, I reckon you got yours at a good time. My harmonic balancer was basically sitting on the bolt, it was the only thing keeping it on!
All the best!

I had mine come off on the EJ22 on the way home from the pub when Mrs El Freddo was driving (fun fun).

Pulled the balancer off just now. Has a nice big chuck taken out of it.
As does the key on the timing gear. Crank threads and bolt are still micky mouse so thats a relief. Pain about the timing gear but better than a new crank

I reckon you've got off lucky, new key and harmonic balancer will see you rolling again for cheap. My harmonic balancer had a rounded edge grooved into the back of it from the key but I was very lucky with that too.
Glad to hear the bolt and thread is fine

Looks like this has been an issue before. If you have a look at the key it looks like it hasn't moved, but it also looks like it's been glued in place!

This brings back memories
Note there is a bit of leak from the crank seal. Despite how epic it looks its 99% WD40. Been blasting it to try and loosen the crank sprocket. Brother is coming round tomorrow to fab up a pulller and get it off

Good news and bad news (kinda).
Brother and I fabbed up a puller for the crank sprocket.
er came off easy peasy
Cleaned up the nose of the crank with some brake clean and 1200 grit and replaced the oil seal back there.
Woodruf key was stuck so tapped it out with a punch and came out like this haha
And now the bad news. The place I ordered the parts through stuffed up and forgot to order me a new key, however they are being champions and delivering it to my house for free even though they dont normally deliver to residential. Top blokes.
So shes still in the driveway looking like this

Sounds like you dodged a bullet on this one mate!
Don't forget pick a part for bits like this, cheap as chips and I'm sure there's one a pot load closer to you than there is to me! Imalch's on Centre Rd in Sprigvale is also a favourite of mine

I know but it's all clean and tidy and slides on and off likes its meant to now haha. Yeah there's a pick a part just around the corner from me. Imlachs has 2 legacys and a few rxs. Even some L series but the place is God awful. Cars dumped in wherever they'll fit, the place is a swamp and they like to put cars straight onto the ground so anything underneath is basically trapped as you can't Jack them up cos its a swampYou'll have to take that cam belt gear off to get the key way in

So today was a barrel of laughs. Day started well. New key turned up late morning,
went on easily and with the help of my brother the timing belt went back on easy peasy. Then we got to the last bottom idler. When I had the engine out for head gaskets that idler had some dicky threads but always went back in and torqued up fine. It had obviously had enough this time though. I was gutted. The prospect of a cheap easy albeit timely fix exploded in front of me. Thankfully my brother knows his way around a bodge or two.
So we tried cleaning the threads out with a tap. this helped but would still walk the bolt out
We considered glueing it in with some metal epoxy. Would have worked but anyone trying to get it back out
Then eureka! The hole actually goes deeper than the bolt. So we went and bought a new longer bolt, cut the head off, epoxied it in. So now my final idler is held on with a stud and nut and is rock solid like it was .
The epoxy needs 16 hours to cure so the timing belt is back on and its lightly done up. Tomorrow ill be torquing it down properly and finishing the car off.
Repair bill is still under $50

Red manifold adds 15kw.
I had it tuned so at least 25kw haha
Took forever to bleed the damn thing but the car is finally driveable again. Been too long
