What a lot of people don't understand is that the OBDII protocol didn't apply in Australia until 2006. The US started the whole OBDII thing (where the vehicle checks it's own emissions) back in 1996 but we have adopted the European version EOBD which is essentially the same but we miss out on a few of the monitored systems such as the evaporative monitor.
The whole thing was about standadisation across manufacturers so emissions could be monitored and non compliance codes generated, thus the OBD connector was standardised, along with the languages the vehicle 'speaks' to the scan tool and the codes themselves.
As the connector was being produced in vast numbers, manufacturers could purchase the connector cheaply, rather than make their own, and assign pins wherever they liked to non OBDII vehicles. The 1994 VR Commodore was a classic example, OBDII style plug but it did share pin 5 (GND) and pin 16 (Batt+ top power the scan tool) but will not comm with an OBDII scanner as the vehicle doesn't speak the OBDII languages nor does it share the other pins (6&14). Holdens used this connector from then on, but not until VE did they move to OBDII.
In short, just because it has the plug doesn't mean it's OBDII.

The ECU in a NA Gen3 will be a Hitachi and is SSM only.
I use a Scangauge 2. I can get heaps of data out of it.

Josh are you likely to come to the next Newcastle monthly meet? I'd love to talk painting. Your spoiler and bars look mint!

Hope so mate. It all depends on my work roster though.
Well I've been putting around (LOL!) in the Hobo for a few days now and I'm really enjoying it. She goes good and I'm really looking forward to messing around with the TT system and really getting her performing as soon as the other CEL issues are sorted.
Big props to our Wob for taking time out from his own modding schedule and helping me with scanning the ECU codes at his dads workshop.
For those of you who don't know Wob, he's a top bloke who's grown up around cars & workshops as his dad is a mechanic, so....... he's basically well on his way to being a mechanic himself.
One of the friends that I've made on SubyClub who's opinion & knowledge has proved very valuable to me time & time again.
Mad pisshead too lol.
Cheers Wob Wob.
So, we scanned the CEL history on the bitch with an awesome 'Snap on' scanner and got 5 codes. Great bit of kit that Snappyon
Promptly cleared those & scanned again.
That left 2 codes, even after a flog around the block.
Front O2 sensor & Cam Position sensor.
Rob checked the Cam sensor & it was ok. We replaced it with a spare I had & it too was good. Power supply was also good.
Code remained
.
When I got home I swapped the O2 sensor for a fairly fresh one. Performance & boost increased substantially. The dud O2 sensor wasn't making any adjustments when we had the scanner hooked up, so it was obviously forked.
I thought I'd give it one more try with the cam sensor before moving on to wiring and the ecu. I swapped the sensor from Bluekong into it and still no joy.
That made 3 Cam position sensors tested with no luck clearing the code. Time to move on to other areas like wiring and the ECU.
All the while, I've been having this horribly stressful intermittent issue with starting the car. The fuel pump wasn't priming & it had cut out whilst driving several times leaving me stranded on the side of the road. I was stuck for nearly an hour the other day trying to start the car, so forked.
I had to pull out of an overtime shift at work so the whole experience cost me hundreds in cashish. With that in mind, I didn't want to spend any more money fixing this issue because it had already cost me enough.
I have spares galore, so the fuel pump relay was swapped, fuel pump controller swapped, under dash wiring checked, fuses checked, fuel pump checked.... all with no success, it was driving me nuts.
All research I did online was coming up with the Brant alarm and the advice was to remove the keypad. Hobo already had the keypad side of the alarm removed so it made me think the issue was elsewhere, which stressed me even more as I hate electrics and find it really hard to read & make sense of the wiring diagrams in the workshop manual.
Nevertheless, I spent most of last night going through the manual and surfing the interpornet for clues...this morning I removed the entire Brant alarm system.
I was a bit worried there would be something I was missing that would stop the car from starting once the alarm was removed, but it started first go and has every time since.
WIN, PROBLEM FIXED!
So very very happy. fork you Brant ya piece of forking shit........fork you, shit cubt crap!
I spent the rest of the morning dealing with the Cam sensor problem. Swapped the ECU, no luck.
Took it up to the auto electrician and got them to quickly check the cam signals at the ECU. I had it all set up so they could simply plug in to the wiring at the ECU, even pointed out which wires for them to check, thanks to WillC for posting up the ECU pin outs.
It was clear there's a wiring connection problem to the ecu. So I booked the car in for them to fix it. ICBF!
Great day
Now I'm celebrating with a bourbon & cooking a roast dinner.
Very happy.

Brant removal is such a liberated experience. No more shut downs on the freeway

Awesome write up Kong. Glad to see the original turd turned into a master peace. Love everything you have done to it especially the engine bay. So tidy and cleeeeeeean. Im looking to respray my front and rear bar also. Was 1 can enough or did you have 1 can each? Also what size can and what did it cost from memory?
Also what codes were your gates belts?
I done a part search and found 5PK885 for alt and 4PK885 for AC but only found black.
Did you get 875s?

Put an r at the end of the gates part number and it's a racing belt
Which is blue
Happy to help, Kong !
Google gives me 1 result with the "R" on the end. Im assuming Kong went with the WRX ones which im guessing are exactly the same but different part numbers. The recemended Legacy/Liberty belt was 5PK885 and they dont come in a blue. Theirs this 875R here http://www.ebay.com....=item3a93247989

Cheers dude.
One spray can wasn't really enough to cover the bumper and when you factor in clear coat as well... at $33 a can, it gets pretty expensive.
I decided to get a litre for $99 and use a spray gun & compressor as I had both bumpers & the boot spoiler to do.
Much better finish using a gun, especially with the clear coat. The clear coat cans are about $20 each and leave a bold peel finish.
And yes.... 5PK885R and 4PK885R.
The alternator needs to be completely unbolted on both sides for it be lowered enough to get the belt on.

Dude did you set up a garage booth? What guns are you using? Did you machine cut or by hand? And (last one) are you running with the ausmini recipe?
So many questions! Thanks mate (y)

It's all been put on the back burner for now mate. Haven't been back to the electrician yet.
When I dumped the gearbox oil there was a handful of metal found, It's trashed.
Clicks while driving now, wasn't noticeable before I changed the oil. So I'm going to grab Patty's gearbox from his GTB...... 4.4.
In the meantime I'm working on Bluekong. Returning it to stock & cleaning her up for the new owner.
Ripping out the shocks & springs to put in the Hobo, love the height and stance of the Tein springs. Just perfect.
Bluey gets a better gearbox and new front brakes in the process. Painting the roof also.
I still have the shell of Whitekong sitting in the driveway and the landlord is giving me greif. I need to pull out the engine and cross member before I get it removed.
I've also been servicing a few mates cars in my spare time for a bit of extra cash & beer.
So plenty to do but as you can imagine, I'm pretty flat out ATM.
When the time comes, Hobo will get some love.
Lots of love
