Did you change the bearings in the new hub also?

I will give it a go, but I have a feeling you won't hear it.

No. The bearings were not changed. Both wheel hub assembly's have come off other separate wagons that have been parted out and have low k's (about 80,000 km on both). My next step is to spend $145 each on second hand wheel hub assembly's that have had new wheel bearings bolted in from Cardiff Automotive.

Looks good mate. Big improvement

Thanks mate. ;)

How do they look with lights on?

It's coming along nicely mate.

I haven't had a chance to grab a pic but I will definitely get onto that tonight for you man. Thanks.

The sound you think is the wheel bearing - you sure it's not the passenger side timing chain tensioner? Like a constant ticking noise?

It's not a ticking noise at all. It's a pulsing vibrating noise without the vibration feeling, that's all. It's quite a significant noise as well, I just have NO idea where it's coming from or how it got there.

You should be able to feel the bearing isnt right when you rotate the hub by hand.

And you could just get new bearings pressed into your old hubs, or get a mechanic to remove your current hubs and press new bearings in, in one day.

Exactly right, and that's how the front LH hub felt. I knew that one was shot. The other one I didn't feel by hand, I just assumed that that was where the noise was coming from. It seems that after replacing both, the noise is still there and is somewhat worse now. May be the replacement LH hub was bad as well? I have no clue. I'll have to have a look and move the wheel to see whether there is any give or not.

I've been told that it's more expensive to get new bearings bolted in as opposed to replacing the entire wheel hub. True or false? That's the only reason why I've been going down this road. $145 for a hub with newly bolted in bearings from Cardiff Automotive seems like a great price according to a few members on the forum also.

I've got my original LH wheel bearing in the garage still. I could send it down, ha ha.

I don't think a bearing would be over $100 bucks

It's the last thing I'm gonna do. Replace the LH front one once again. If that doesn't fix the problem then it's definitely something much more severe.

Easy.....

Is that a sarcastic easy or would you do it for me?

I seriously have to move down to Melbourne, haha.

Have you tried rotating tyres?

Or was the noise still present before the new rims/tyres

The tyres are non-directional.

The noise wasn't there before I changed the LH wheel hub the first time, so that's got to be the issue. The reason why I changed the original hub was because the bloke at Pedders (when I did the Tech Check & Report) said it was shot. You could shake the wheel slightly. Other than that I can't give you any further details man.

Yea sounds like it is the hub for sure then.

Thats a good price for that Cardiff automotive one. A brand new hub and bearing (japan made) is over $200

I feel lucky to only be about 30 mins drive from Marks :D

Ah okay, ive only ever bought a bearing and done it all at home. Didnt think places would charge that much, but they gotta make a living too.

GEN4 front wheel bearings are a bolt in affair. Piss easy driveway job, Just don't damage the wheel speed sensor (Remove it)

Wheel bearings can howl and have no play in them and vice versa.

Take it to a workshop, Get them to drive it on a hoist and listen to the bearing with a stethoscope.

Thanks mate! It's coming a short way from when I bought it but she's treating me very well and I am continually impressed by what Subaru produces. It's definitely a car I would like to own in the long term.

I'm getting Mark to help me out with putting new bearings in my original hub. If that fails me, then I'll definitely take on the advice Cam. Thanks for that man.
