Cleaned up and ready to go in.

I won't say shiny, as some builds in here put the appearance of this engine to shame, but I got the accumulated gunk off it, including the crap in the rear around the flywheel, and washed off what looked like salt around some of the exhaust shrouds.

Still on the list:

  • sort out steering rack boots (get those tie rod ends off)
  • source an exhaust
  • finish stripping the cut
  • begin on the transplant patient (that'll be leading up to the first week of school holidays when the family's away)

Win!

I was reading about the alternatives to a hot torch for removing stubborn bolts  - CRC freezeoff, loctite make a similar product. Basically liquid CO2 with a penetrative oil.

I've got a can of compressed 'dust off' which gets mighty cold when you use it.. so I turned it upside down, and 'spraying' lightly, dribbled the liquid (CO2, N2?) coming out onto the tie-rod to give it a good freezing right up against the lock nut.

30s of that, then both ends broke loose with minimal fuss.

Greasy fun time with the rack boots now.

Serious beer required to attack the dump-pipe(s) shields (mostly rusted on the under-car part) and mounting bolts (ditto)

Front loom and aids tank out.

I think that's basically it for the cut.  Time to start prepping the victim.

Nice work.

I relocated my crusie control vacuum tank under the inner guard where the TT tank is. Cant believe the amount of extra shit on a TT.

I also installed the DW65c in the Outback; definitely going to source a fuel pump controller -- there's a hum that's quiet noticeable.

hey Duncan i think we have some GTB cat backs coming in the next container this week if you are after a stock exhaust?

we should also have fuel pump controllers with plug in stock from memory.

looks like the conversion is coming along nicely.

thanks, Ben.

Ben,

definitely after a stock/bolt-on cat-back. Was going to ring around a few wreckers this week with B4's.

I'll give you a buzz on Monday.

been a bit slow lately -- basically waiting for school hols to pull the old engine.

Been checking bits and pieces on the new engine -- wastegate, exhaust control valve, etc, plus prepping the bonnet for a bit of minor dent repair and a respray.

It pays to look at everything. I came across this -- a hole in the RHS manifold breather - seems the ground strap mount was bent down, and the bolt's been tightened till it popped through the breather cover. Took it off and repaired it some RTV.

Bonnet bogged, sanded and primed today.

Rattle-can job -- colour and clear will be also.

DSC_0090.JPG

The cut came with a short(er) shifter, so I spent 30min pulling out the outback shifter with the intention of swapping them over (and investigating why the outback gear shift had recently gained a whole lot of slop).

  1. Bloody bush spacing is about 5mm wider on shifter from cut. So I'd have to pull out the link, too. I gave up at this point, because a bunch of other stuff needs to be removed to do that (exhaust shields, possibly g'box mount), and I cbf'd today.
  2. Found where the slop is - the bushing at the gearbox input seems to have disintegrated due to a minor oil leak out of the box.
  3. I measured the spacing from engine block to cat-back exhaust join, and the exhaust diameter at that point, plus the two hangers beside the gearbox. I reckon the dumps from the cut will bolt straight up to the outback exhaust! .. sure, it'll be 2.5" cat-back and even smaller at the muffler output, but it'll do for now while the budget is tight. I just need to get an exhaust shop to reweld a couple of the hanger brackets on the dumps, which are falling apart. This also gives me the option of a couple of cheap mufflers I've seen floating around.

Matt - I might well be interested if price is right.. will keep you posted.

In other news,

downpipe brackets re-welded by local exhaust shop (they were half rusted off).

I wasn't entirely happy with the appearance of the crappy plastic IC pipes. Just ordered these:

Just a tip on painting the bonnet. You will get a smoother finish if you lay her flat, less chance of runs, and you can load up the paint a bit more and it will "self level" just not HEAPS more :) and don't sand between colour and.l clear coat.

Cheers... I might try that when I lay the colour down (now that I've cleared some space in the garage).  For the primer, I just put down lots of very light coats with 5min between them.. no runs.

At the moment, I'm back sanding and filling, as there was a minor ding which I thought 'nah - I'll leave that' the first time round.. but its been nagging away at me, and there's no point going to all this effort sanding + painting if I still have a ding in it.  I'm filling on the horizontal, as the putty I'm using sags a lot.

All tips on painting panels welcome.. I'm a complete virgin in this space.

Am pretty happy with the way the deep dent and couple of scratches have turned out.
