A quick vid of the noise/whine.  There's no rattles so just ignore those in the vid.  It's more noticeable on decel but is there on acceleration as well, with the clutch in or out.  Definitely sounds like it's coming from the gearbox/clutch area.

Diagnose......

Thanks.  Heading up to the mechanic and I'll suggest that.

Cheers Hoons.

Wish WK was here.  I'd just swap the shaft and see if it fixes the prob.

It was diagnosed with a bad input shaft bearing.  The mechanic dude drives an RS and knows his shit.

Looks like I need a secondhand box.

Does the noise change noticeably if you push the clutch when coasting in neutral?

Centre diff bearings.
Best to confirm with a stethescope driving the car in the air.

If you need a hand with the box swap, Holla.

No change at all with the clutch in, mate.

At idle in neutral there's a bearing noise which I originally assumed to be a worn thrust bearing but when the clutch is pressed in the noise is all but gone.

A dud thrust bearing would do the opposite. Noise when pressed.

On acceleration through the gears it's there 100% of the time.  Louder in lower gears and decreasing slightly as the gears get higher but not by a great deal.

The noise definitely comes from that area too.

She's in Seymour in storage at the moment.  Getting transported home next Thursday.  doortodoorcars.com.au

Can't wait. I'm lost without my tools & car.

The mechanic took it for a spin with me in the car and he didn't seem to think it was center diff bearings..... but that's always going to be another possibility.

Most likely going to get it done by a pro for peace of mind.

Cheers mate. What is it with me and gearboxes lately  :sarcastic:

Hahahaha someone beat me to it on this one.

I haven't given this one a hard time at all. I've been nothing but a gentleman.
I see no point in giving it to an n/a... It's just a cruiser.

Update.

Yesterday & today I replaced the gearbox with a second hand one sourced from a local wrecker.  They couldn't tell me how many K's it has travelled but I assume it would have been a lot as the linkage on it was completely forked. The gear stick would've been so sloppy.

So far all is well with the new box. No grinds and feels it ok.

I hope it's up to the task because I'm sick of changing gearboxes in my driveway. It's so shit.

The oil from the original box had a lot of silvery goodness. There was a fair bit of metal on the drain plug magnet. Fine smooth metal.

Not the best photo, sorry.

Now I wonder if it's worth getting the old box pulled apart and inspected.

There seems as if there was some serious metal grindage going on.  It's funny because the old box felt tight as. I'm curious to see where it all came from.

If the old box is bin material, why not strip it then bin it?

Gives ya some experience pulling down a box at the worst

Metal like that comes out from most older gearboxes and diff's I've found.
If it's not visible bits of teeth, you are ok. Most likely bits of bearing, It should feel a little gritty.

Pull the box apart and learn :D

Hahahaa I might do it one day.  The only thing putting me off is the smell of gearbox oil.  I forking hate it, I think after sleeping 2 nights in Whitekong when she broke down stinking of it is the reason I hate it so much.

Everything that was in the car when the gearbox blew up either smelled like oil or had oil on it.

It damaged me in my feelings. I hate GB oil so much.
