Alrighty then, get ready for one big ass story lol
Well it truly has been forever and a day since ive added any form of an update about the ever changing frakenstien that is my car, and after recent mods ive been getting nagged to post some shizz up and make it known again.

Link to old thread http://www.subyclub....-matts-gen3-rx/

Now some of yous may remember the old silver na RX that she was back in the day, probably at hooters meets and the newey cruises.... i went through an assortment of suspension from billies to k-sport coilovers before coilovers were the norm on daily drivers (now on Toms B4), and had the now popular GD WRX rims in satin black....other than a Legacy garnish (yes Alex i know its not a real Regashi lol), some clear indicators, a Varex and buckets she was rather stock...but still fun as hell to drive..and i loved the shit out of her!!

I then found out about jap wreckers and import monster and started to get a bit nutty with extra stuff lol

Yes it was a decent mod list for back then, and all made the car that much better to drive, but i was craving power and boost! I pondered for a while to simply buy a B4 (what was i thinking!!) and install all my gofast bits into it...but after hearing about everyones issues with the twins i decided to stay away from the abortion that is the twin turbo B4 lol....then i was looking at the gen4 gtb wagons, now i still love these cars but they never had the "toughness" or the complete package i was wanting and would need extensive mods to get me where i wanted to be...which is pretty much a track car on the road :D

So after some talking with other subyclub chaps who had converted their cars, i was pondering what engine i could possibly shoehorn into my bay...cheap out and go a v7 wrx or go all out with a 2.5 sti?
I opted for the mid ground and got Al at AMauto to search for a suitable donor EJ207 V8 sti with a DCCD 6 Speed and Brembos in japland that was neat and with no/minimal mods.......within weeks he found me two (the V8 is a twin scroll turbo engine in japan running the vf37)

The first was front damaged which i steered away from for obvious reasons
Posted Image
But the second was a gem, and only had rear end damage (stickers were all lying about what the car had)
Posted Image
Posted Image
The donor car had a diffback and a boost gauge..ohhh and some crappy earthing shit all over the engine bay lol....all in all a very clean example, so it was tested in j-land and shipped over to Brisbane where it got dirty whilst waiting in quarantine :( and then ended at AMauto where the good bits were stripped from the half-cut and sat waiting to be installed....and yes i know a lot of people convert themselves these days, but im an electrician with no mech skills and am of a mind that if someone else is gonna do it right, than im gonna do that the first time, and Al and Miles guaranteed an 5 day turn around on the conversion for a very good price!! So no hating on me getting a shop to build my car lol
Posted Image

Now, in the meantime i obviously couldnt just put the engine into the car, i needed some supporting bits, and general things to make the swap easier..including a pwr radiator to be super safe, AVO silicone intake, DEFI style cluster with jdm wiring, gc8 sti alloy LCA, DBA discs, ferodo DS2500 pads and v sport dogbones for the brembos along with GoodRidge braided lines, DEFI BF boost gauge DCCDpro controller...and a lot of other stuff that isnt shown that Al told me i needed like a B4 front swaybar and STi endlinks etc etc
Posted Image
Posted Image

At this time i also wanted some tougher suspension (ksports are great but i wanted to fully trust whats under me) and needed some rims to clear the soon to be installed Brembos, and a Turbo bonnet to feed the TMIC (and just to look cool obviously lol)....so i opted for some TEIN flex type coilovers with the EDFC controllers from Japan as Aussie distributors are ripoff merchants!!, and i got hold of some neat 04 STi rims that i had blasted and powdercoated in satin black same as my WRX rims. The bonnet literally took me about 8 weeks or more to aqquire as the people i bought it off (northside wreckers Melbourne) are complete and utter fuckwits! Long story that i may tell later, some know it though...anyways i finally got it and fitted it up ready for some paint, i actually got a few things painted like the boot holes welded up and sprayed, door dings repaired, front n rear bumpers, qtr panels etc etc

So finally in August 2010 (i think?) it was time for the migration up to Noosa where i had an appointment with a fuckload of awesome! So the car was packed full of the good bits and i drove what would be my last road trip with the current na setup....fun times were certainly up ahead!
After talking to Al and Miles for months before the set date we knew we had it all ready to install, and when i rocked up i saw the new STi heart sitting on top of Als toolbox in all its glory (shoulda got a photo!)...
Al talked about some last minute items, i showed him the parts i had, he showed me the exhaust he'd be modding to fit, and the bits of the donor car scattered all over the workshop, after a good conversion about the car i left him to do his thing whilst i found my accomodation and chilled in Noosa for a few hours at a few recommended spots

Heres a few pics i got of the progress, as i dropped in a few times during the week cause i was only a five minute walk away...
ven gave him a hand for a liitle bit as he was solo with Miles' firstborn due that week

Theres Al!

So after a week of walking around the beautiful town that is Noosa, and drinking lots with the locals (and a few with Al) it was time to pick the beast up, ended up creeping into saturday morning due to not having Miles to help, and also my door was crushed on the hoist (lol) and replaced during the work....i'd just got it painted a week before!!
Al and a mate had to miss out on Jamboree to finish the car, and great thanks go to them for sorting it all out...hell i even chipped in and installed the dccdpro switches into the console and checked all was still working...
Only things that were no longer operational was a rear door switch not working (wiring fault behind the cluster, fixed later that week), no seatbelt warning light anymore (seriously who cares) and "because jdm yo" the dash no longer had dimmer control (also no great loss as the dash light levels are perfect)

Posted Image
Hilarious photo of me about to give a thumbs up but Al was a bit trigger happy and got me just before it lol

So i payed my bill and had my first taste of 20psi in a gen3.....fark me!!! It was scary at first as i'd never driven a turbo, but it put the biggest smile on my face and i intentionally took the long way back to my dads before chilling for the weekend till i could get it engineered in Brisbane by an RTA signatory before driving her home

I also met up with Kris from Rising Sun whilst up there and he got me a new pulley cover as mine was cracked, an intake snorkel as the cut never came with one, and i scored my mesh jdm grille off of an RS30 halfcut aswell as a jdm coin pocket fuse door (all fuses now labelled in Japanese yo!!) also sold him the STi struts and strut brace and my old na whiteline swaybar which saved me putting it up on rexnet etc

So after some beers at dads and some TLC the bay was neat once again and the new grille and intake snorkel were fitted up
Posted Image
Posted Image

So it was done, i now had the gen3 that id always dreamed about owning..an engineered turbo with 6 speed, brembos, R180 and all the extra bits that completed the package....so i said cheerio to dad and the fam and headed back down south, where after much research in Qld i had decided to book in with Michael South at MSR (this guy is a Subaru GOD!)...mainly cause he was so close to home (20 minutes) and atleast $400 cheaper to tune the car than anywhere else, and the rexnet boys loved him so i fugured he must've been a bit of ok (as i found out later, it was the best decision i could've made)

Anyways..so lets just say the drive back to NSW was chock full of win, aside from being wary of an annoying overboost issue due to the exhaust (which was to be tuned out later)...hitting 25psi at 2000rpm in 5th was a bit worrying lol

Whilst cruising back i looked at my tomtom and saw this! lol
Posted Image
Bad picture but it was showing a pretty heltik speed of 1158kph!!! proving that the mods really did make a difference lol

Once home i did the required show off to my mates and a few days later dropped the car off at MSR for what was going to be the first of many visits, Michael promptly asked about the car and what i was expecting, which was simply a safe tune..and he then went about his business..hes a no bullshit tuner, really honest and happy to answer all my irritating questions lol

He modded my Intake Air Tempetature sensor to read from the manifold (moved it from the airflow meter and poked it into my intake manifold )and not the intake for better compensation and gave the car a few cans of UEC (lets just say there was looootttsss of smoke!!), changed the oil and checked the car over before rolling her onto the dyno

Posted Image
The old girl all locked in and ready for some fun

A few issues were found during the runs;
First the scoop was way too small for the STi cooler and atleast needed a seal made up to make the most of what little air is being forced through the tiny scoop
Second, the tcpauto dump wasnt the best, Michael showed me how the twin scroll turbos needed a long taper to dump into, where the tcp dump had too small of a bellmouth..not bad, just not ideal...i lived with it as the final result was enough to be happy with...for a while anyways ;)

I walked away with 190kwatw, a safe tune, and a few things I needed to do to the car, so i spent the weekend making a custom seal to fit the intercooler as an STi one is nowhere near fitting, and also fitted two STi water sprayers to the seal and plumbed them into a twin pump washer bottle with customised STi switching and an 8psi hobbs pressure switch for the "auto" control, had it working off the stock 3 second timer for manual operation and the hobbs switch into the 3 second timer for auto control

It was then back to MSR where Michael modded the STi tmic y-pipe and installed a splitter into it to spread the air across more of the cooler making it a bit more efficient, then back on the dyno where i got 197.7kwatw! And after some tweaks to the cams and some road tuning it was back in my hands.. My god did it pull so much harder! Had a lot more usable torque down low now and was heaps better to drive!

Posted Image

A few weeks after this i aqquired a Process West cooler and a hyperflow 4 port catch can for cheap so i spent a few days installing them and modding the cooler seal to suit....unfortunantly the dyno showed that the PW cooler suffered bad heat soak compared to the STi cooler due to how solid and heavy it was (though it did make more power) and it was promptly replaced with the ever faithful lightweight STi tmic

Posted Image
Posted Image

So the car has been this way for around two years now, with a few little items added like

a carbon (colour-coded) ARC bonnet scoop add on lip to add a bit more airflow, lifts the scoop a lot actually
Posted Image
Posted Image
some gold STi rims which were solely track rims, but now have a permanent home till my CR kais are fitted
Posted Image
had this STi option seat fitted for a while, but it sat me too high (im kinda tall)
Posted Image
a set of Bride Ergo 1.5's.(cheap!!).i currently just have the drivers side installed which sits me nice and low
Posted Image
got hold of an S401 steering wheel!! Cheers Alex!!
Posted Image
S401 hazard lamp switch
Posted Image
Ditched the hyperflow 4 port as the piping looked a right old mess, and got a Grimmspeed AOS
Posted Image
Got some Eifel Prova bonnet dampers and coated them black
Posted Image
Posted Image
RedLine gearboot, handbrake boot and centre console cover with an 06 STi handbrake lever "modified" to fit
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Work Emotion CR Kai rims with RE11 tread fitted
Posted Image
Posted Image
Turbosmart kompact series BOV (shimmed up with a heap of washers for funny tmic flutterz) and an extra elbow to powdercoat black ;)

Alright...too many pics now on the first post so im moving on down :)

Sooo, all this modding and adding to the already in my mind "complete package" was keeping me content...but there just came a point where i simply wanted more power lol...i had always said 200kwatw and ill be happy, but it just wasnt enough. I wanted a kick when coming on boost, something that the twin scroll simply never could give..and it also ran out of puff around 6500rpm which was irritating!!

So off i went to talk to Michael about what i could possibly do, a few ideas were tossed around and in the end i decided to move over to a single scroll turbo 1. to get that kick on boost, and 2. more turbo's to choose from that are "proven" to work.
I was immediately attracted to the BBK 20G-TDO5 (7cm) that has pushed around 250+ on stock STi internals with the right mods and tune, so i went and offered Troy at ProSpeed some cashish and i had one in my hot little hands!!
Posted Image
Posted Image

Got the wastegate and exhaust inlet ported by Michael and got it all ceramic coated...just cause i could
Posted Image
Posted Image

Also bought some Kando equal length headers (im not a boxer burble kinda person) which i had ceramic coated, a turboXS dump pipe (which i ended up not using in the end), a new XTD stage2 clutch from the US, also aqquired a version 6 RA quickrack off skippy at allthingssubaroo, which is the quickest of all the gc8 quickracks

After what felt like an eternity of just sitting on all these bits i started to try and sort out how id put it all together. I chased some ID1000 injectors and a xforce hiflow racecat (because racecat!)...it was here that Michael convinced me to go an xforce mild steel 3 inch dump pipe as it would flow better, be quieter being mild stell and already has the flex joint attached with all required O2 sensor bungs, as i needed to install my first sensor into the top of the dump since the engine was for a twin scroll

Then it was down to cooling the charge air?? i was going to fit a custom water to air cooler, which have been proven to work great for high power daily drivers if done right, i had eveything planned and ready to buy....then i started thinking about a hyperflow TMIC and adding aquamist injection like the yanks do....but this was only an idea as not many people have tuned with it over here

In the end, after a day at the Eastern Creek drifts listening to S15's fluttering all over the place i thought Posted Image it?!! im going a custom FMIC lol...after years of not wanting to have one due to popo issues etc etc lol

It was after this day that i figured id pull my head in and install all my gofast bits at once, so after many talks with Al at AMauto about a custom FMIC with a rotated turbo housing shorten the piping run..and installing everything else i had lying around, along with a engine out 100,000km service.. and a few talks with Michael about the tune, i was booked in for the 10th of September for another week of winning in Noosa again (almost exactly 2 years after the engine was installed!) and pre-booked in with MSR on the 17th to have it tuned the day i came back as the car wouldnt know what was going on (Michael also de-tuned the engine before i left making the mix richer, turned the boost off (so only 7psi) and wiped some timing on-boost for me, so when i put the bigger CAI on the engine wouldnt lean out so much and destroy the engine before i got it back

"safe as houses" were his words...and it sure was!

It was then around this time that the inevitable happened, some dopey girl reversed into my car with a Nissan patrol whilst i was at the tattooist :( i came out at 9pm to this!!!

Posted Image

Ohhh was i pissed!! No one around and it took me two goes to find the note the size of a postage stamp on the windscreen in the dark..was pretty relieved to find it though, but i was like fark! perfect timing :( lol

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

She hit it real good for a carpark nudge! She folded up my qtr panel and cracked my centre garnish aswell as warped the boot and shunted the bumper..took me over 24hrs before she actually answered her phone and offered to give me $1000 which she said would "more than pay for the damages" hahahahahahahaha

I was like hell Posted Image'ing no! If you have insurance thats what were doing as shannons is taking care of me ;)

Took a few weeks to get into the repairers, and am still chasing her insurance company for rental car reimbursement? but they had it for a few days and did a great job! Cant even notice it..though i had to chase the jdm garnish and cornerlamp as shannons wanted to get one from japan which was a massive wait...$250 later i had the parts (thanks to Ben@Ichiban!) and was given the money back the same day, so that was the Libs first battle scar, and hopefully last..but all is good again so i moved back to the job at hand

Soooooo anyways, back to what we're all here for...

i started to once again gather parts so it was all sorted before i left for Noosa, and save some money ofcourse lol

Decided to fully open up the exhaust and go 3 inch all the way through to allow the turbo the best chance at making the power, and wanted something better than the tcp system i had...ofcourse i went to HiTech, who after some talking sold me a a rear muffler off their STi system without hangers or a tip,and an 8x4x12 mid muffler...so pretty much i was getting an entirely new system made up by Al, and all custom mandrel bends this time..not a modded off the shelf system (setup would be dump, flex, cat, mid muffler, rear muffler)

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Mmmm Hitech

Posted Image

i think thats all of it???

Ok so i had all my bits and i had a few extra service bits at AMauto like aux drive belts etc that Kris delivered direct to Al for me, and was ready to go...a week of accomodation in a luxury apartment with the girl and 5 days to do the tourist thing around the area while Al did all the hard work i pay him so well for lol

So i set off again to Noosa for a date with destiny, i really couldnt contain the excitement lol
When we got there it was business as usual..i unloaded the car and showed Al exactly what i wanted and the parts i had aqquired, he approved and said have a great holiday!! Came back 3 hours later to grab our luggage to find the engine out on a stand and Miles deep into the 100,000km service :) so we left knowing the car was in more than capable hands

I left it alone for a few days and one arvo dropped in to see the progress...what progress indeed!! everything was in aside from the exhaust and starting the engine! He said seperating the gearbox was a biatch and required a grinder and a wedge lol, and the turbo was a tight fit...but all in all it was a great build and went together really smooth

Al decided on a 2 inch hot side and 2.5 inch cold side on the fmic piping for fitment reasoning, i kinda understand as its a bit tight!!

Some pics i took that day quickly whilst chatting to Al
Posted Image
Posted Image

I didnt drop back in until the day i had to pick her up, when i did i was shown the awesome work he had done to the exhaust system!! It honestly belongs on a wall somewhere as it is beautiful!! and sounds sooooo quiet compared to the old system, sort of like a lumpy Evo now..no burble whatsoever :)

The enginebay looked incredible with the piping and aside from a rough idle due to the bigger airflow meter ran great, and the flutter hahaha, ohhh the flutter, simply awesome!!

Posted Image
Simply stunning! You can see the Beatrush diff carrier and new diff bush inserts in this pic
Posted Image
Note the "modded" CAI..and the blue silicone hose sheppo speaks off lol..its an odd size so im getting a bit of egay

All rotated and black

I was now a happy man!!!! I just needed a tune so i could feel what had been done, it felt really torquey around town though even on the de-tune tune

So off i went cruising carefully back home to NSW, keeping the BBK below 5psi so i didnt hurt her before i could get a tune, i was booked in for the following day at MSR for a quick once over and re-tune to see what we could get out of the new setup.
Michael and I decided to keep it around 22psi due to the hypercrap pistons the V8 engines have, but was told an easy 250ish atw should be doable...anything above 200 and i would've been happy lol

So after an impatient 8 hrs bumming around at my Girlfriends i got the call that it was ready and unfortunantly didnt make what we were expecting?? This i found out was due to the ebay spec intercooler core which had a great deal of pressure drop and wasnt flowing all too well...still made 230kwatw though!! (i'll try find the dyno sheet) with a fat torque curve that came on a bit later than the VF37 obviously.

The car has had a lot of time spent getting the cams to pick up the bottom of the rev range and make it a lot more drivable around town, and it shows!! No longer does it bog down if i take off at too low revs, and driving around off boost is a lot more enjoyable...particularly seeing as its a much bigger turbo than before...... but once you plant your foot you get a quick suck as it spools than it just keeps pulling all the way to redline...a bit too quickly sometimes, as if you dont pay attention its really easy to bounce the limiter in second lol

So after a good chat with Michael about how we can go about unleashing those extra 20ish kw's it was decided to chase a quality plazmaman evo7 core with smooth flowing cast end tanks when the budget allows (probably tube n fin to keep a good flow to the radiator and recover a lot better than the bar and plates do) and modify the piping to suit, though it should be close as the current core is an ebay evo7 upgrade core....but for now the power its making is nothing to sneeze at, so im not rushing to change it atm :D

Now i was tuned and safe once again, it was time to sort out the engine bay as it was looking a bit shabby with piping sorta everywhere and intercooler piping that was beautiful, but simply not stealth enough ;)

I spent a week chasing some new norma worm drive clamps, some new heater hose and some satin black paint, and on my 5 day break i pulled her out the back and stripped all the FMIC piping off and sent it away to my powdercoating mate along with some modified top radiator brackets, some hellatones horn grilles, a spare BOV elbow and a spare coolant header tank ive had sitting around waiting to be blacked out

Posted Image
Posted Image

It was going to take 48 hours til i got those bits back so i got stuck in to cleaning and re-organising things a bit under the hood

First i lifted the new power steering cooler away from the body and covered the whole car in sheets so i could give it a hit with some satin black to allow it to blend in a bit more...came out really good!!! Upon putting the cooler back on i re-ran the fluid lines so they werent just sitting loose on top of the intercooler, they now are cable tied neatly along my JDM front reo cross bar and where they poke into the engine bay i was getting them rubbing on a not so smooth edge, so i split some washer hose and pressed it onto the edge of the metal, giving a bit more protection to the power steering hose ;)

Posted Image
Posted Image

Second i wasn't happy at all with the way the grimmspeed AOS hoses had been routed now that the TMIC was gone, it just looked really messy (im still not happy with it actually lol) so i pulled all the hose off, including the factory hoses from the heads...i then ran completely new hose from both heads and from the PCV valve (the old hose was very loose on this valve but its now tight again) and re-organised them neatly to go back to the AOS, as hidden as possible. I have also had a spare barb on my AVO silicone intake since the AOS install that had a plug on it that i was never happy with, so with a t-piece and some modification, the outlet from the AOS now runs to a t-piece and feeds both the barbs which cleans it all up a bit.....as said im still not 100% happy with the hose routing over the top of the engine, and im sure ill change it again soon, for now though its a heap neater than before!!, particularly where the heads "T" together

Posted Image
Posted Image

Irritatingly whilst re-doing the AOS hoses i snapped a barb off my Purge Control Solenoid!!! i knew it was there and how fragile it is, but i just put too much pressure on a hose and "SNAP"...i was not happy lol...so i borrowed my girls car and took a trip to Cardiff Subaru Wreckers to get a second hand replacement off an 02 WRX, which i really, really carefully installed lol

Posted Image

A few other things i did whilst it was all apart were
-painted the corroded alarm hood switch bracket black
-plugged the second water pump on my washer bottle until i can decide what im gonna do with the waterspray setup
-re-ran the Intake Air Temperature sensor wire as it was in a bit of shambles (sensor mounted in the intercooler piping near the throttle body)
-finished off the throttle body bypass i had done years back by using the stock hose to join the two bungs together to just neaten it up a bit more
-re-painted the now modified 72mm CAI (ill do it a bit better at a later date)
-pulled the TMIC seal off my hood scoop splitter and re-sprayed it black before re-fitting it as it sorta holds the hood lining in place
-removed the HID/s from my foglights as ive had nothing but problems since ive installed them...with the lights continually getting moisture ingress and becoming real "fog" lights

So with all that done i went to pick the freshly coated piping and parts up, put simply it looked incredible!! I got the piping done in a Harley like wrinkle coat, the brackets, BOV elbow and grilles done in a satin black and because hes a champ he coated my header tank in a black ceramic coat!

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

I quickly went about putting the intercooler piping back in place with the new hose clamps...and was loving what it was starting to look like....i even had a few people ask why i used plastic intercooler piping and not stainless or aluminium lol.....the piping was a bit of a biatch to re-install, but i have it down pat now...and once in place made the engine bay look a lot cleaner! Unfortunantly theres still that one piece of blue silicone used for the BOV as it's a 34mm barb and is not a very common size, so im chasing a new black section on ebay as we speak :)

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

The good thing is that i feel i mustve had a slight leak in the piping somewhere as the cold start idle used to be really rough (which i simply put to having the new larger Air Flow Meter), but its now almost back to how it was before the new gear was installed...so happy days

So now im just waiting on a replacement for the blue hose, a section of hump hose for the 2.5 inch piping going to the throttle body (as theres not much give in it atm) and am looking into installing the new header tank with some phenolic spacers to lift it away from the intake mainfold, and probably spraying the top of the PWR radiator black so it blends in a bit more with the whole "murdered out" theme as Alex would put it

So the bullet is almost complete, just a few little things here and there to do to keep me content, but aside from a new FMIC core its pretty much done

..................i think lol...............

***I'll add a mod list as soon as i can remember everything thats installed***
