Hey guys
One of my headlights on my 01 Liberty rx stopped working the other day so I started considering HID headlight replacements. Does anyone know if the HID headlights will be too strong for the lense or if it'll be okay.
Thanks Scott

You could grab some JDM HID's, Ichiban usually stock them.

There's a guide on wiring on the forums:

The stock lenses arent designed for a HID so the light will be scattered and will piss off anyone you drive past. Id do what Staxta suggested and get some JDM HID lenses

They are actually the same. No difference in the lenses, just the levelling gear and mount for the actual globe. If you look on the black frame of the headlight, it says what globes are compatible. One is the H3, the other is the D2R hid globe.
Definitely get the JDM lights to fit HIDs though, the levelling is important.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

The reflector is also different, it has a 20mm step in it.

Well the rev A - C does, not sure about D&E style.

I have a rev d b4 and put aftermarket HIDs in both hi and low... the globe placement is the same as stock so the reflectors work fine.

But a brilliant white light instead of a shitty under powered yellow.

I had to drill two holes in the back cap to accomadate. except for that it was plug and play ,If i remember you need an H4 and H7 Kit. They come with a ballast box you need to find a place for!

Dont need my foggies anymore (which is good cause they interferred with my front mount LOL)

This.

I'm not a HID fan.

My Gen IV has them and are disappointing to say the least. My old Commodore with decent globes had far better headlamps.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

If you decide to run the kits, make sure you get a D2R kit, not the D2S. S is designed for a projector assembly, R is designed for a reflector. I love my HIDs. The level adjustment makes them so much better than the halogens. I'd put some higher wattage globes in, but the plastic lens on the gen 3's makes it impossible.

Are the AUDM ones glass?

I think someone on Club.Liberty swapped the lenses over for that reason.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

Nope. All gen 3 lenses are plastic. The ADM ones generally aren't yellowed from the HIDs which is the main reason people change them.

Keep the factory 35W 4300k ones. 6000k will give you too much glare, and be even less useful in rain and fog.
The last thing you need is to have the cops pull you up for HIDs without washers etc.

Is there any benefit from using a HID kit for the jdm HIDs? Would it provide a stronger beam?

Not sure what you mean? The JDM lights have HID globes from factory and the reflectors inside the unit are designed for HIDs. AUDM lights are non-HID.

There would be no point taking the HIDs out of a JDM headlight and installing it into an AUDM headlight.

no i mean would the ballasts that you get with HID kits produce a stronger beam for the JDM lights?

errmm... no.

Bulbs will have a rated wattage. Ballast will make no diff unless the current is wrong - in which case they'll probably have a very short life.

Not sure what the HID specs are - whether they're some sort of constant current drive (after the HV start-up)..

I'd say don't mix and match bulbs and ballasts.

EDIT: here's some info http://donklipstein.com/d2.html

I did a little reading... see here: http://www.theretrof...dballasts.html/

basically, you could put a 55W aftermarket ballast on a 35W (OEM) HID and get more brightness.

Reliability will be compromised.  By how much - is probably an exercise for the experimenter.
