That would be a whole different kind of hectic...

I haven't had an extinguisher in my car since swapping to WRX seats as the rails are much lower. Really should get another one installed.

My cars insured for what it owes me. Would be a shame to see it burn, but I wouldnt be devastated.

+1.

Your car shouldn't spontaneously combust but I guess mine is stock and stuff so any fault that would cause a fire would be at the hands of Subaru or my mechanic...

Yep he was the same from what he told me.....i think hes just put so much effort into it and it was the day he was gonna see it all finished

And on a sour note apparently the insurance company is investigating it as insurance fraud?!

All you need is one leak spraying on just the right spot Gaz...no need to have any crazy mods

Worse thing he probably did was lift the bonnet

True. Is it that common to justify having an extinguisher though? In all my years of driving I have never personally seen a car go on fire. The worst thing that's ever happened to me was blowing the engine in my VS Commodore (I already knew about it, but didn't care and wanted to get rid of it).

well that sucks dogs balls... I would think the evidence he just did a dyno tune would shut them up pretty quick... after all, why would you throw almost $1k or whatever at a tune  if you were about to torch it?

I guess they're covering their arses.. hotted cars are probably a high insurance fraud risk because people do put the dosh in them and can't recoup when selling.

I hear PS fluid is pretty flammable, too.

No one ever said you had to though?

Its just good to have if you need it....i dont know about you but ive put way too much time and money into my cars to watch them burn from something small like a bit of oil on something hot just because i have no extinguisher or am too poor to buy one

It wont stop the huge infernos...but itll stop something small from taking the whole car or someone elses car on the road

Think of it like insurance..you hope to never use it...but youre glad its there if you do need it

Yep defently carry an extinguisher.

Pulling into a drive way in the old mans hilux a few years back, saw smoke billowing out from the back/canopy. A small 1.5kg extinguisher was just enough to put the fire out. Turns out the dual battery install had shorted out and set some cardboard on fire.

Only thing to note is once you use one (The majority used will be an ABE powder extinguisher) you will never clean up all the powder and it gets absolutely everywhere

oh... well being booked for one doesn't make a whole lotta insurance fraud sense, either.

I hope he doesn't get stuck spending too much time justifying himself to the insurance Co. - I'm sure he's gutted enough as it is.

I'm with you on the extinguisher.  Cheap self insurance.. not just for the car.

After attending numerous vehicle fires as a fire fighter, I 100% believe in carrying an extinguisher with you (even though I don't yet practice what I preach).

It literally takes seconds for a spark to turn into a full on flame fest and if you only have seconds to take action, I'd want those seconds to count. It's not just losing an insured car, there's so many other risks involved that can be so easily avoided if you can quickly cool down a it spot before it is too late. Especially if my daughter was strapped into her car capsule!

And on a sour note apparently the insurance company is investigating it as insurance fraud?!

I imagine this is because it happened at the Kariong lookout. It's a good out of the way spot to burn a stolen car/commit insurance fraud.

I was definitely the safest place for him to go when it happened but it looks suss on paper.

At Subinats last year a avcs line leaked on a blokes 05 sti. Some quick thinking with a extinguisher had it under control in 30 seconds.

It was ready to burst into flames.

Happens all the time.

I was once behind an old Merc and I could see flames coming from his exhaust - I assume it was the cat? I tried beeping and flashing my lights and waving him over but he just waved back and kept driving. I had to turn off and he went straight but I'm positive it wasn't long before he had to pull over and make a quick exit!
