I'd be seriously thinking cooler and injectors before putting the turbo on and getting the tune. Td05-20 is a whole different kettle of fish from the td04. Have you upgraded the boost solenoid?

Is there a reason with getting the injectors and new top mount beforehand? Could i damage the engine/turbo if I dont?
I need a tune before powercruise to get rid of the pinging (i think) so it will need to be retuned again anyway…

And no I havent upgraded the boost solenoid.. What should i be doing about this?

How long are you on the Coast for?

Leaving Coffs on Saturday after work for an engagement party (dont know exactly where) and then have to meet the guy with the STI seats to swap them over and then pretty much drive straight home… Was hoping to then put the new turbo and headers on, ready for the tune on Tuesday.

Those standard 440's are dangerous with more boost, I did a no.3 ringland this way...

Get bigger injectors and a cooler, Lower IDC's and intake temps will give you piece of mind if you are giving it a hard time.

Which injectors do I have in mine? 04 wrx, not Sti.
which injectors do I get?
Could I still use stock top mount if I were to get injectors?

u need an sti top mount at a minimum and sti injectors at a minimum

Have you put any more thought into squeezing some more power out of the engine. Like strapping on one of those intake fans

Really shoulda booked in with michael south while on the central coast :) cheap tune snd easily one of if not the best tuners around...hed sort the car out, and tell you what to do and what not to do with the 20g

That turbo needs supporting mods to work at its potential sam....either 750cc ID injectors or minimum sti 550's...depends how hard youll push it

And the sti tmic would be a good idea, with a scoop that seals against it to get the most airflow, the smaller the tmic the hotter the intake temps and the less the car can be pushed when tuned...so even a scoop lip to cram more air in wouldnt go astray

My 20g will push me to 250atw+ with around 23psi...but i wouldnt put anywhere near that boost into the wrx motor!

My vf37 runs my 550cc inhectors nearly to the limit at about 200kwatw...and the 20g is a much bigger turbo! So its gonna want more fuel....hence im runnin 1000cc ;)...and a fmic to be super safe...along with a heap of other supporting mods

550cc's as they are very available and sti intercooler at a minimum.

Hyperflow make a nice top mount, In flat black too.

Front mount is the only way forward here..

Not starting a TMIC vs FMIC war here, but The cost effectiveness of FMICs these days far outweigh the negligible gains from a far more expensive fancypants brandname TMIC.

Plus, the dose.... The dose from a TMIC sounds like a female squirrel being finger banged by a toothpick. Embarrassing to say the least.

Yes, injectors will be close to maxing out with the 20G, but slap it on regardless for the whooshkahs and chuck a boost tee to limit it to 17psi. Injectors won't max out this way ;)

It's not 20psi hecktik brah, but it'll paint the picture for you. Slap the Td04 back on, and learn from the experience of it all I say.

Bigger injectors, tune and a better, ball bearing turbo later :) (when cash flow returns to acceptable levels)

Cheap TD0520G not worth the tuning and injector upgrade IMHO. $400 turbo, with $1500 worth of supporting mods?

(prices are estimates of RRP)

I am leaning pretty heavily on keeping the 20g in the box for a few months, getting some bigger injectors and a front mount set up.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice though. Such a great help!

Haven't checked this thread in a long time.

We'll done on all the mods and props for taking the advise of those who have trod this path before you.

Thumbs up.

Well then turbo is on its way. Hopefully here by the weekend so i can install on sunday arvo once I get back from the central coast.

(the new motor is getting a bit of a workout on the highway, WTAC, then central coast this weekend to pick up some new blue sti seats, then Powercruise next weekend)
Tune will be coming on Tuesday, got the dyno booked and the tuner is available!

I suppose I will start looking at an Sti top mount and some bigger injectors at some stage, maybe after powercruise…

Just put the new Cold Air intake on… The thing sounds crazy!!! BOV is way too noisy haha. Will see how we go after a few days.
Also installed the new GFB adjustable short shifter, did it in the dark tonight so will be adjusting it properly tomorrow!

Anyone know how much boost i should be running with the TD05 20g?

Cheers, Sam

you won't run a td05 20g high enough in its efficiency range (20+psi). get an 18G or big 16, that way you can run adequate boost (18psi) and not sacrifice spool and still have over 200kw atw. 550's will be required and a walbro pump.

to the guy maxxing out 550's @ 200atw i don't know how that is possible, i have 565's with 18psi on a 20G and running below 90% duty cycle.

careful how many times you go back for tunes, it will start adding up. you better off adding everything on and getting a proper tune done.

PS if you want a bit more spool grab a grimmspeed 3port BCS. stocker bleeds boost, whereas the 3port interupts. stops the wastegate from opening prematurely (if that happens it slows spool).

also if you are going that nuts with mods, you may as well chuck on a silicon intake at the same time, easier job if you are removing the turbo anyway and there are good gains to be had there.

if you want any higher than the above, you are going to need forgies and other supporting mods (fuel, headers etc)

"The guy" has a name

"Maxxing out" was probably a touch exagerated, Theyre running pretty damn close to it though Alexxx...lots of fuel, 20psi (because gen3) and i know its above 90%...so not much extra to SAFELY play with

Main reasoning was i would only use these as an absolute minimum...no way in hell would i run my new tdo5-20g off them lol....i was told i needed 750cc minimum but due to inconsistencies with the 750cc ID injectors weve up'd that to 1000cc to be on the safe side ;)

Quicker spool and more intake noise, The quicker spool is bugger all though.

I would stay away from a cheap 20g, As things are cheap for a reason.
Save save save and get something from Blouch (Or similar) along with a fuel system to allow a bit of room for error in case something went wrong + a wideband.

And save for a gearbox!
