if it was pinging then you had a problem all along, did you check AFR's? IAM status? get a tactrix cable and download learning view and do a quick scan and post up results, will tell you a lot of info about the tune.

Yep, AFRs were on 14.5-14.7 when cruising, would go down to ~11 or so when accelerating and drop to ~23 when decellerating… No point in a tactrix cable. The car is in Brisbane and I am in Coffs Harbour so its a little difficult, even more so now that I have no car hahaha :/

$5 on a cracked ringland.

Sucks to see this mate :(

Yeah Trent @ Mercury said it could be a cracked ring land, but cant confirm until the engine is apart…

Wtf?? That's farmed Sam! Sorry to hear mate. Something doesn't sound right. Be very interested to know exactly what the problem was.

It's very rare for a tuner to cop a blown engine. Seen it many times before, all care but no responsibility. I hope for your sake you get something out of it

I dont think I will get anything out of it, Ben said he could help me out a little with the funding of a new engine, but i am pretty sure i am going to go a different direction with it. Have been speaking to Miles at AMauto and he's quoted me on something pretty cool so ill see how i go.

sorry to hear mate , but when i corrected the factory boost controller hosing it was pinging its ass off driving past the shop :( if you decide to go another 2nd hand engine i can help you out, got one coming.

Cheers for all the help you have given me Ben, I really do appreciate it. Ill see how i go with the engine though. Might look at getting a brand new 2.5L block and attach them to my heads, and push for more power.

Those AFR's are normal, right?

I get similar figures.

Well it would be silly to sell the car as is and start from scratch with a new car. I absolutely love the Outback and I think by throwing another 10k into it, I could have something really special (but will be eating noodles for the next 2 years or so)

Miles from AMauto gave me a good list of things that he suggests I could do….

Option 1:
EJ257 short block
Cylinder head machining
Head gaskets, rocker cover gaskets, seals and O-Rings
Timing belt kit (could probably use the brand new one off the old engine?)
Water pump & thermostat (same as above?)
Oils & filters
Spark Plugs
+Labour

Total Price is around $5500, which i think is fair.

He also quoted me to forge the engine, which im pretty sure is the path ill take:
Pistons & rods
Sublet bore & hone
Fabricate parallel fuel rails
TGV deletes (if applicable)
Turbosmart FPR
In tank fuel filter
Labour

Around $3500….

Then he went into quoting for heads and cams, plus a massive turbo, but i think i might go down the VF34 option with some decapped or bigger injectors at this stage, as I have already spent around 10-11k in the last couple of months on it..

I suppose i just have to cop it on the chin, as there is pretty much nothing i can do to recover any costs….?

Will keep this thread updated either way :)

Yeah thats what I thought too :/

If it's a cracked ringland, Open up the oil cap while running the car.
If you have some smoke pulsating with the compression strokes of the engine, Ring lands will be the cause.

My first EJ205 had some oil consumption and these symptoms, Opened up the engine and found no.3 had a cracked ringland. I went for one spirited drive after getting a suss tank of fuel, Heard some serious pinging and it was too late.
Go with the EJ257 short block rebuild option and a p&p'd VF34, You will get full boost by 3000rpm or so with a quality tune. You will be able to do it all safely with the correct injectors (565cc's at least) and fuel pump.

Or go nuts if the budget permits, My advice above will be pretty reasonable on the wallet though.

Yep I am leaning towards the VF34 with decapped injectors option, with a forged STi ej257.

Forged will be the go, Those glass pistons are known for doing ring lands with upped boost.

Have they pulled your motor down yet ??
If your bores & crank are ok, maybe you could just get away with a new set of forgies & some good rods ??

A tactrix cable doesnt tell you AFR's... it tells you if it has detected knocking, retards timing, MAF and so on. it will tell you HOW your engine let go.

Sorry I meant its no good to me as I'm in Coffs and the cars in Brisbane...

When we tuned it the night before I left for powercruise, he said that there were absolutely no knocks and that the engine was running fine.
He said that the "pinging" noise I could hear was wastegate chatter.

Spewing...
