Well as expected the timing belt went on easy with an extra set of hands. Still leaks though , im out of budget and out of patience for it all. So ive parked up the car and it can sit and think about what its done for a while. Then ill get a new pump and probably some gasket glue to guarantee it goes on properly. Also will make Ty help
In other more happy news my STi trailing arms have arrived. Will be going on the white car when its finally roadworthy. I dont see why they wouldnt pass seeing as theyre OEM parts but you never know

Top effort.
I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

Been all quiet on the western front recently. Ty was going to come have a gander at it today but had to work late so new plan is hes going to come round on a weekend and we'll just replace the pump and go from there. I must say im getting pretty good and stripping the front of the engine down now. Hopefully this shit heap will be running without puking all over the driveway soon

Big day on the tools for the first time in a while. New pump, gasket and thermostat went on. Old pump was slightly warped so thats why it refused to seal >_>. Had the peanut gallery plus Ty round to help and as expected it flew apart and flew back together. Shes all buttoned up and bled now. Few trickles from the top rad hose which has a small cut in it, its super crusty so could do with replacing anyway. She also needs a battery. Other than that shes sweet. I actually like the buttony clutch once its moving. Looking forward to replacing the shifter bushes and going for a proper row through the gears. Anyway onto the necessary pictures
Shiny new pump with scungy thermostat housing
Peanut gallery at work. Old man river showed up with even more children. Was more like a day care than a workshop
Drippy rad hose
All sealed up and parked the right way round in the driveway for the first time in 3 months

Stay tuned for roadworthy news and skids
And thanks to Ty for helping massively, even if i did try and crush you between 2 gen 2s

Gen 2 is love, gen 2 is lyf.I want Gen 2 now.
Put a new rad hose on and bled it sort of using Old Man Rivers bleeding kit thingo. Neat bit of kit. Just as we started the engine coughed and stopped. Im 90% sure its out of juice as the gauge is below E and its copped some abuse while in that state. Chucked 3~ L we had lying around at home with no luck so going to put more in before I start worrying

Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this road hugger!
Also if you want to reuse Subaru water pumps it's best practise to store them in some coolant while you're doing the engine work. Typically the seal dries out then it leaks requiring a new pump.
Good to see you got it sorted though. I didn't know these DOHCs used shims. I presume the shims checked within spec? I'm also assuming these are the same setup as the H6s with their shim tolerances, hence why I asked.
Keep up the good work and the steady flow of pics

Cheers

Ive done coilovers and brakes etc myself. Never really done any engine work so was really in the deep end haha. The pump on the car was warped slightly so by breaking the seal it would never go back on properly . The heads use shim over bucket lifters. Didnt check the specs on them, just made sure they went back were they came from the best I could. I got very lucky as a few jumped out or had their markings rubbed off bit but luckily theres no ticks and she revs smooth as silk

Some of the earlier EJ25D engines (1996?) have the hydraulic lash adjusters instead of the shims, they also have a different spark plug seals too which is weird.

More news. After a drive to get some fuel an O2 sensor code popped up so thats something else to fix. Ty said just drive it hard to get it back into open loop mode for the mean time so skids are in order. Will obviously need a new or at least working one eventually though. Also picked up a new battery. Only one they had with small terminals was too expensive for the moment so grabbed one with bigger terminals hoping i could make it do. I couldn't lol. So will take it back and get the smaller terminal'd battery after payday.
