Whats going on with the 'Back Sam?

Hey lads,

Spoke to Trent at Mercury today, i have acquired $5000 cash, so the repair will be on it way very shortly.
I know it is going to cost more than double this including a tune, so I am going to try and get a little more cashish together so that I can get the 'back back on the road in as little time as possible…

Going to Bali at the start of next month so that will delay repairs for a week or 3.

I have sourced a brand new 05-07 2.5L STI short motor from over in WA for $2000, which is about a grand cheaper than buying from Subaru.
Apparently there was bearing material in the oil, so that means i have to replace alot of the parts from the WRX motor anyway… Hopefully I can get away with using a fair few parts still. So it looks like it was the tune as such that caused the engine to die, it was the motor… (which had no warranty on it as I had a road tune done on it….)

I am looking at around $10k minimum to do the repairs, which sucks cause i have just spent that on the conversion.

But, once that is finished I will be looking at a ej257 in my outback, i have a set of uneven headers and a CAI sitting here, as well as 2 x TD05 20g Turbos which i will either put one on, or sell and get something a little bigger and go for a set of de-capped injectors.

Hopefully I can get Mercury to start working on the engine ASAP, I miss it so bad.

In the meantime I have bought a 1985 Volvo GLT (rear wheel drive hatch-back) with an angle grinded muffler, LEDs and just took all of the interior out of it bar the front seats and dash…. Absolutely hooks, love it!

2.5 will be full of win! I have some sti 550cc injector if youre in need ;)

And yeah if there was metal n shit in the oil things like your oil cooler etc will have it still in it..either get a new one or get it ultrasonically cleaned...id still get s new one as a few bits of metal can fubar a new motor!

And truck it down to msr this time for a real tune! You wont regret it mate ;)

Ill see how i go with the injectors, but thanks, ill keep them in mind!

Yep, Trent said he was quoting on a new oil cooler and all the jazz that goes with it, may as well do it right so that its less likely to happen again.

I might even look at going for an aftermarket ECU, not sure yet…
Im sure you guys will hear about it though

Good to hear some progress dude but sucks that you pretty much have to start from scratch :(

Definitely worth a trip to MSR to finish it off!

Looks like Miles from AMauto will be repairing the car.
I cannot justify Mercury charging me $4000 for labour just to replace the bottom end. $12,000 all up from there but about half that from AMauto so will hopefully be starting the work on the 5th of next month.

Thats like nearly the amount of money it'd cost you to get another v7-v8 sti half cut in your outback.

Your gonna have to get your old number plates again :P because its now a 2.5l turbo will the car beed engineering or will a blue slip be alright?

Just change of engine. Don't think I'll need engineers cause it came factory 2.5L
These fuckin number plates are costing a fortune!
Might get name personalised ones next time haha.

Did it come with a factory 2.5L sti motor did it??

Every engineer (20+) ive ever spoken to about engine conversions says otherwise.....and now if you change anything from stock (exhaust, intake etc) you need to pass the IM240 test

A lot of people dont do this and get away with it without issues....but......

I was able to do just a "change of engine" when I went from 2.5L N/A to 2.0L Turbo, so I don't see why it would be different.

Yeah the RTA dont give a shit, aslong as the AUVIS station says its ok, as said a lot of people do it this way.....doesnt really make it right though...

all the AUVIS mechanic did with mine was look at the engine number and said "its not our job to ensure its legal and safe, thats for the engineers and police to battle over"

By all means im not telling anyone that they have to engineer their cars, but it is the correct and legal way to do things

Yeah of course. When I have enough money, then I will look at getting it engineered properly.

Car will be sent to AMauto on Wednesday for Miles to start working on it first thing Monday and hopefully will be finished by the time I get back from Bali on the 12th November.
I am going to be putting a brand new EJ257 short motor into it, using my stock heads… But also putting a set of UEL headers onto it, a RAM Cold air intake kit, TD05 20g Turbo and then getting a Godzilla Motorsport tune.

Looking forward to getting the car back.
Also need to look at getting the plates changed ASAP.
Was looking at it just before and came up with a couple of ideas:

PSSSHH
50.SLOW
OBK.25T
LOLJKS
LOWBAK
AREU16

Etc..Etc

if you plan to run 20psi + on the 20G you will want pistons...

google EJ257 piston failure, glass piston ej257.

read on rexnet you will find an abundance of info.

I ran 18psi for a long time on my motor with track days with a very safe tune, however others have had similar levels and blown them very easily.

for the extra $600 on a set of forgies you have a shitload more security and room to move, that way you can max the 20G out run it at its efficiency level (22-23psi) and pump 250kw atw out of it. on a stock 257 thats not a very good idea... even MY08 STi onwards are blowing motors at this level.

its your money mate, but i did a lot of reading before modifying mine and i capped my tune off because any higher and it would of popped.
